:) Every time I use my 7 1/4" circular, I loathe it more than I did before. I can't be the only person who hates the things, surely?

You need therapy! It's a power tool and you're a man. You should love it!

Don't forget to add VAT and import duty to that price. Search on ebay for worm drive saws and there are sellers who add the TAX/ duty to the price. That way you will get a rough idea of the price.

Or use this
http://www.dutycalculator.com/new-impor ... lculation/

Any item - even used over £15 imported from outside the EU attracts the VAT/ import duty :(

Is it this saw?

Nope, this is the saw from Amazon.com That price includes duty and carriage, so I think it's a pretty good deal.

I hate to tell you Mark, but that's the USA Amazon site and dispached from USA so you WILL get stung for VAT & import duty when it arrives on our shores. Also the free shipping applies to USA only.

The total price of £219 I mentioned earlier includes £32.53 shipping and £41.39 Import Fees Deposit, which I assumed was Duty? I'll have to read more about it later.

Seems you are right Mark :)

Calculating Fees

When AmazonGlobal products are shipped to eligible countries, an estimate of the Import Fees will be levied on the items in your order for shipment to countries outside of the U.S. With your authorization, these funds are used by the carrier or another agent to pay the Import Fees on your behalf (or the recipient's behalf) to the appropriate authorities of the destination country ("Import Fees Deposit"). The payment of import fees is the responsibility of the importer and is levied based on the laws of the country into which the products are being shipped.

The Import Fees Deposit is an estimation of the taxes and duties that may apply and isn't an actual calculation. Customs regulations and tax rates applicable to certain goods may change between the date the taxes and duties were estimated and the applicable taxes and duties on the date of import into the destination country. The duty or tax rate is often determined by the classification of a good, which varies by country and region.

For AmazonGlobal items, you won't be charged additional fees if the actual Import Fees exceed the Import Fees Deposit we estimated. For items sold by Amazon Marketplace sellers, please check the seller's policies.

If the actual Import Fees (paid by the carrier on behalf of the recipient to the customs and tax authorities of the destination country) are less than the Import Fees Deposit collected by us on your behalf, you'll automatically be refunded the difference to the payment method you used for the order. You'll receive a notification e-mail confirming the amount of the refund. The process takes 60 days from the shipment date.

Hi chaps,

I mentioned in a previous post that I'd found a used wormdrive saw for sale on Woodwork UK...well, I received it yesterday! It turns out my suspicion that I'd find a left-bladed saw more comfortable to use was correct. At last, a circular saw which feels natural to hold!

For anyone who's interested in my thoughts on the saw in question (it's a Skil HD77) here's a very brief review:

Good

Very powerful - it didn't slow while ripping various pieces of timber, including a very wet 6x2 lump of European oak.
Quieter than my big Hitachi.
Easy to see the blade and cut line.
Narrow baseplate, so doesn't catch on clamps etc..
Solidly built.
Weight helps to keep the saw straight.

Bad
Non I can think of :D
Oh, requires a 110v transformer if you don't already have one.

Now I know wormdrives are for me, I'll think about importing another one from the states along with a load of blades. The older one would then be converted to a disc cutter for masonry by fitting a diamond blade and fashioning a dust shroud for use with an extractor.

Many thanks for all your advice!

Mark

Sounds like a winner. :)

Does this one take the diamond knock out blades then, rather than the standard round bore blades? If so search for Freud diablo blades, they are the diamond knock out blades. :)
