how do you hang yours?

hi all

well because i have time for once i would like to make a tool board to hang the few tools i have now and the newones that will turn up under the tree tmorro' :lol:
at the moment i have a bit of board with nails stuck in to hang saws etc and s/drivers chisels etc are just left in the tool tray on bench.

i want to hang ply pannels on french cleats and fix tools to them, i dont want to hang everthing on nals but im lacking insperation on how to make racks so pics,drawings and help please

Hi Speed,

I've found that a pair of thin battens with spacer blocks between (kinda like an air sandwich) is a great way to hang files and rasps without the need to drill holes in the handles which can make them less comfortable to use.

By screwing through the spacer blocks you get a nice firm fix and you can use them to seperate flat, cabinet, round etc.

i had a hour lastnight and made a file rack i ended yp with some 2x1 and cut mortices out for them,

then i needed to hang marking knifes, combo square paper scraper etc, and i did with the air sandwich style and its very good saves choppin mortices out for everything, i am going to experiment with this design abit see what else i hang

Here are a couple of photos of my work space including a file and chisel rack and also my storage for planes and other tools.
I have very limited space so I have ended up cramming a lot of stuff into a very small space but still managed to keep it relatively clear of clutter as this is the space where all my work is done and also where I work with my clients.

Note the nice little scrub plane in the last photo..a brilliant tool thanks to philly !

Yes Andy that is a pochette on the wall, it’s the first stringed instrument I ever made back in 1981 …I found a picture of one in a book when I was at school and there where a couple of measurements in the book so I had a go at making it, got hooked on making stringed instruments, and have been making violins almost ever since.
To be honest the space is really too small for quite a lot of the cello work I do so I have to keep everything pretty tidy.
There’s very few jobs that really need power tools in my work, so apart from my pillar drill, disk sander, jig saw, small lathe and a small band saw most of my kit is specialised hand tools together with more planes then I really need and the rack of chisels, gouges and files.

This is by no means complete as it was taken much earlier in the year...few more planes to add and chisels plus a couple of 'shaves (when they arrive). All sharp edge chisels are behind transparent acrylic - Rob
