This is an idea i've had for years but never been able to work out how to make it. It looks quite simple but will the extreme outer edges of the shelves be sturdy enough to hold anything of any weight? How do we thing the joint between the post and the shelf is made?

I'd like to make it so that the post is not central but to one side and the shelves tiered (if that makes sense)

Are they supposed to be curved or is it me?

I would laminate them for sure but it appears that they are solid. If you made them curved it would be far easier to get right than all dead straight, still, I'd put a couple of studs in the wall to support the long end

I see what you mean but I think it's a trick of the eye. I wouldn't want them to be curved. Using a stud at the end of the shelve was the conclusion I'd come to but wondered if it's overkill?

If you can't work out how they were done have you considered asking Don Kondra how he did the original? As I recall, perhaps incorrectly, he's quite helpful about his methods. That might eliminate all speculation. Slainte.

I made a similar set of shelves a few years ago - the support has dado's running through it for the shelves (although this doesn't go all the way to the back of the support or it would fall apart  ) The shelves are notched to fit around the support and screwed in from the back. Cut all the joinery while the stock is square-ish - once you are happy it all fits together you can do the shaping. I carved the shelves on mine on the underside, tapering towards the outer edges.
Hope this helps,
Philly :D

Cheers Chems

Looks like you were right Aidan, the top one is curved ;)

A metal welded up structure along the rear edge of each shelf and between shelfs the black part covers the main structure and fixings also the shelves are routed to cover there strengtheners.Thats my guess.

There are some fittings on the market that hold the boards in place with long metal rods with an oblong fitting welded on one end of the rod with two holes in it for fastening the rod to the wall.
Rebates are made in the board edge to take the oblong end fitting that fixes to the wall, then the hole drilled to take the metal rod.
The ones I have seen give safety weights for different lengths and diameters of bar.

Hope this makes sense???

yep thanks Mike and Old. Makes sense. Might have to have a go at this.

If I remember correctly, there was some discussion about this a while back on the Woodrat Forum, but that seems to have been down for a while, so can't confirm it.

You could ask Aldel if he remembers it.
