Unbeknownst to me, my parents got their 1930s semi reroofed 10 years ago. I'm doing some remedial works in their bathroom and have had the ceiling down, allowing me to view the roof. Whomever did the reroofing hasn't used a breathable membrane, instead using a thick black plastic. It definitely isn't breathable. Is this something to be worried about? The loft hasn't been converted or anything, it's just a standard cold loft. I think that's the term.

Thick black plastic, sounds like dpm, if so not the correct material.

I suppose old tiled roofs used sarking felt, although I believe its purpose was so the roofer could strip a whole roof, nail on felt and then re-tile without worrying about weather. I doubt that felt is breathable although not as bad as plastic for condensation.

I would have thought using a breatheable felt like tyvek would only be a tiny part of the cost of reroofing, so surprising it wasnt used.

if it was done 10 years ago and the roof is not showing signs of mold or decay or condensation, I would not worry too much. whether it is the right or wrong material there are no adverse effects!
