House build

Hi, I started a house build in my spare time a year ago to this day and thought I’d show some progress pics. I’ve got a bit of time as works slowed a bit so plan to finish over the next six weeks but thought I’d start by showing the build up to now.

Hope this is of interest to people who enjoy seeing this kind of stuff.


Here’s us digging the footings a year ago, took a day with the concrete pour the next day.

Then had my dad and friends help pour and level the slab

Frame going up, this was built by me and my mate who’s a chippy, all 6x2 at 400 centres clad in 11mm osb

Here are the easy joists with create the first floor

Luckily health and safety weren’t here this day!

Frame up, took about 3 months to get this far

Accoya arrives to make all windows and doors, this stuff is great but expensive

I’ll add more later if anyone’s interested

Next job was to make the oak frames to support the entrance porch and the outdoor patio area veranda, I bought a second hand chain morticer, read a quick book on oak timber frame and had a go, turned out pretty good and was quite quick and easy to do.

Here it is layed our on trestles

And here’s how there fixed to the ground, bolted to stainless brackets which are fixed down to the foundations

So, next up we had a roofer felt and batten the roof

While he got on with the roof I wrapped the whole building in a breathable membrane

Roof finished in plain tiles

While the roof was being finished I then cracked on with making all the windows and doors which I’ll show next.

Perhaps I’m being obtuse here, but if that is OSB cladding the frame, it is basically vapour impermeable, so why use breathable membrane outside it?

Simply because the kids would have all fought over it!!! We did add an extra shower in the downstairs loo though just so when there all teenagers there’s another shower to use

To tell you the truth I’m not really sure how the membranes work ect, this was how the architect and building control specified it so I just went along with it. The full build up is 6x2 with rock wool between studs, 11mm osb, breathable membrane, 50mm celotex, 25mm batten with cedar cladding on top.

and in the middle of a pandemic ............... how are supplies being affected for the build?

Nearing the end of the build, maybe 6 weeks left while I build the kitchen, stairs, utility etc. pictures so far are of the build over the last year leading up to now.

I bought everything I would need the week before everything was shut down so should be ok to finish.

Here’s a few photos of the windows/doors being made, all constructed from accoya and made to current regs.

Diminishing rail on the glazed door.

Everything was sprayed in the spray shop before being installed and glazed.

For the main door I used oak
