Is there a honing guide that works with Japanese chisels?
My old Stanley certainly will not do and my newer one from Dick will not hold them steady. Cannot find a suitable jig for the Tormek so is it down to a carefully held finger grip?

Rod

PS still awaiting a catalogue from Ashley Iles!

I made this one specifically for grinding Jap chisels (not honing), on the Tormek. If you've ever tried to hold one in the standard holder it's just about impossible to hold them by the blade and set up to grind. This one tho' holds them (or any other chisel) by the handle, not the blade and grinding Jap plane blades is now a piece of cake. I used to hone them by hand, never found a honing gauge that again would hold them 'cos of the thickness and taper on the blade. Article published on the construction of this jig in F&C - Rob

Thanks everybody - I will have a go at making the jig.

Woodbloke - would the use of some wing nuts/bolts be an "improvement" over the screws?

Rod - I didn't have any bolts to hand when I designed this jig but bolts and wing nuts would probably work just as well - Rob

Richard Kell makes honing guides that work with Japanese chisels. I am using his no. 1 guide for more than a year now, and I am very happy with it. Have a look at **REPORT TO MODERATOR****REPORT TO MODERATOR**.richardkell**REPORT TO MODERATOR**/honingECom.htm

Been woodwokring for a few years by the sound of your post? Be great to hear about your experience and if you have any photos of work, I for one am always keen to see them

Woodbloke - would you be very kind and email me some rough dimension of your jig please?

I had a go at making one this afternoon but found that the only one that would fit my Tormek was a very short one with the "gripping" section nearly on top of the support rings. Perhaps my chisels are longer than yours or my Tormek support rod does not wind out far enough?

A couple of coach bolts and wing nuts worked well though.

Rod :?

Rod - how's this...a pic of the original working drawing for the article, hope you can make out all dimensions:

Made mine from some offcuts of 6mm ply and some bits of oak that were loafing about - Rob

Woodbloke - many thanks will give this a try.
The one I made was similar in every dimension except for 60 read 20 and 50 read 60 so a much shorter over hang?

That's why you had a few problems with it. Make it to the sizes shown and it's just so easy to use. You need to put the chisel into the saddle and do up 'till it just grips, then offer the blade up to the stone and twist slightly to make sure that the edge is running true and square along the stone. Once correct, tighten up the saddle and away you go...'seasy :D - Rob
