... to find we've been burgled. Judith's jewellery, nothing else as far as we can tell. Drawers ransacked but not trashed. Workshop not touched fortunately. Computers not taken.

Could have been worse.

:(

Thanks.
We are just begiining to see what's gone.

Judith's engagement ring. A gold pendant her aunt gave her for her 6th birthday, her first proper piece of jewellery. A silver cross her dad bought for his mum and has come down to her. I think I've only ever seen her cry twice since I've known her, but this last one has really upset her. Very little material value, irreplaceable sentimental value.

The police locked up our house, went out the back door and left a key with the neighbours. Unfortunately they dropped the deadlatch on the front door and so I've had to break a window to get in, as the key didn't work.

One more job to sort out.

Very sorry to hear this, Steve  As you say, it's the loss of items of sentimental value that hurts most. I do hope that you get them back.

Cheers

Sorry to hear that - you must both be gutted. I found some irish guys parked in a transit outside my house the other day - and found one coming up from the garden "collecting scrap metal mate - and thought we heard someone in the garden."

Number plate was too caked in mud to get it - and once they are in the van what can you do. Nothing nicked - but they could have been casing the joint. Anyway, a set of six foot, 3m wide gates went up the same day down the side of the house, and I moved all the equipment into the workshop (which is at least secure now). Well, the most secure I think I'm planning to get it.

grrr....

Steve

So sorry to hear your bad news, hope ypu get things sorted soon, having said that it looks like some of the things that went missing are irreplacable.

So sorry to hear that news.
Like Smudger says - B*****ds!!
Best wishes, anyway. I know that won't help but I can't think of anything that will.

Steve, sorry to hear about the burglary, the same happened to us years ago. Judith had had some skin irritation and took her engagement and wedding rings off and that was the night we got burgled. The wedding ring had been Judith's grandmothers but they would only get a couple of quid for it :(

We ended up putting bars up at the windows.

Like many people i have been through this twice actually, memorys will fade and you move on .practical solutions :-alarm system with a visible PIR ( my brother inlaw who has worked in prisons says they hate them) window locks and five lever locks on front and back doors, security lights
don't leave keys about so they can unlock doors to get stuff out.
My back door which was quite substantial had four glass panes just too small to get through with safety glass. Second attack they just kept hitting the glass till it came out in one piece and some how got through it so i have bars on it now and a visible PIR, you cannot stop this but you can put them off so they go elsewere.

Sincerest sympathies Steve, that really sucks :(

Incidentally, I don't know if anyone else here reads 'Bizarre' (or is daft enough to admit to it  ) but in the last issue they had an article on the increase in the number of self-styled Super-Hero vigilanties in the States. Mostly martial arts experts who dress up in capes and costumes and patrol the streets as a reaction to the way crime is running rampant. 'Here here' says I!

Perhaps we could set up our own vigilante-woodworker justice league, of course we couldn't call ourselves The Carpenters unless there are any of us who can sing really high...

Thank you all for your support, I shall wear it always.

Phoned the insurance co today, Zurich. I explained what happened. We can claim for the theft and any damage. We can't claim for the damage to the front door because I broke it deliberately (How else was I supposed to get in when the latch had been dropped?).

So I've been to get a piece of glass. Of course it's not made anymore, it's 1/8" and they have only 3mm plain or 4mm with a similar-but-not-the-same pattern.

I can fix the damage to my own window frames and they'll pay me a "reasonable amount" for my time. There are jemmy marks to two window frames and damage to the wood inside where they succeeded in forcing one. It's a couple of hours with a wooden plug, glue, sandpaper, filler and a couple of tins of paint.

What do you think?

Cheers
Steve

Have you considered that many times these people return.

Therefore is it possible you can site one of those surveillance cameras (at another property that overlooks yours) so you might enable the police (if they are interested, which they might not be) to recognize the suds if they did come back.
