Hi all.
Today i finally got chance to try out the hollowing tool i assembled a few weeks ago. It seems ages since the cutting tips arrived, but with work, sorting out a certain pen turner & upsetting his good lady      I`ve not had chance to get on my lathe.
I was hoping to keep the mouth a little smaller, but when 2 bark inclusions (?) showed up after i`d reversed the bowl & started hollowing, i re-shaped it & put a slight bevel into the mouth, so at least the flaw didn`t show on the edge of the mouth.

I`ve really enjoyed, this first (if quiet simple) go at hollowing, Even if it has taken me 3 hours. The wood is Horse chestnut burr, i would have liked to have turned a natural edge bowl with it, but as i tried to dry it out faster than it wanted too, the bark fell off, so it became my first hollow form.

Finally i`d like to thank George for showing his inspirational pieces, which are the main reason i even thought about hollowing. Don`t think you have to worry about competition from me though George

That's a good looking bowl.  especially as it was your first.
Love the wood and the shape. =D> =D> =D>

hi doug
i love it, i think you have done a cracking job there on a great piece of wood, what did you finish it with, oh and by the way, this means a second visit now, look like fun to me.

Thanks very much for the kind comments gents. :)

It`s finished with Chestnut finishing oil, i`d have liked to use lemon oil, but the present Mrs B doesn`t like the smell

Steve, you`re welcome anytime. :)

Great work or your first attempt. If only my first were this good.

Keep them coming

Good first effort Doug. Looks like you've got the hang of the tool already!!

Keep us posted with you hollowing progress!!

Richard

Thats a great first hollow form Doug, not much to worry about there. A very nice piece of timber and a good finish.

Cheers all

The lid will have to wait until i have some nice contrasting timber, ( or a crisp looking vegetable  ), that will look good with the stash of Horse Chestnut burr i recently acquired.
This one is from the same lot of Horse Chestnut, though still quite wet, (i`d not tried to force dry this  ), with just an oil finish on it.

HI Doug

I like these a lot but there again I would as I make quite a few myself in burr chestnut.

I prefer to remove the bark though as I like it better that way.

Where did you get your burrs from?

john

Hi John,
Thanks for your kind comments.
The Horse Chestnut came from a friends front garden, 2 very old burr covered trees, that had come to the end of their lives. 1 had already had a large section break off, falling across the road & blocking it, for which he was charged, for 1 reason or another.
He still had problems with the council, not wanting them cut down , but luckily (for me) they finally agreed.
