Hi Guys,

Worked this two part hollow form last night, oak - finished simply with sanding sealer.

Ooooy! that's cheating!

Well done mate, but looking at it I think you should have cut a groove at the join as well. Looks as if you have a groove either side, but not in the join. A third groove would help hide the join line.

Another way is to hollow each half making the base bigger than the top. Make the top over hang the base part at the join line, fix together, then carve some design on the top part. This also helps camouflage the join.

Sorry Loz

Not my cup of tea im afraid

Not keen on the shape or the join

It may grow on me , lets see

No worries, but you know what it actually looks a lot different in the pic, than in the hand oddly. And looks much better in the hand !

Bit posh for a garden String Holder loz :p :p

Good control of dimensions to get the join match, don't know what wall thickness you achieved on the two pieces but the rim shape on the hole perhaps makes it look thicker than it is.
Also a little more attention to the finishing of the hole edge to smooth the sharp edge, not easy on a coarse grain like oak though.

...next 'trick' will be to do it in one ... hollowed thru that wee hole !...)
Or via a wider base hole and plugged with a dummy foot.

Sorry, but I find the shape of the top half a problem. I feel the transition from side to top a bit abrupt. I would have liked a curved rather than flattish top.

I agree with others about adding some form of decoration about the join.

The finish looks very good.

Good effort loz, just a pity the top is flat looking.
Might look good using two different timbers doing it this way to give a stark contrast between the two halves, but would need a good clean join.
Did you glue the two halves together and then remount to finish :?:

Hi Paul, Dave,

Next one willl have NO FLAT TOP !!!

Everything was finished before final assembly !
