Alright chaps

I'm off on me hollibobs this weekend. Thornham in Norfolk. Big family get together.

Any good stuff to visit round there?

I hear there are some good beeches out that way. Got a couple of small boys and a baby to keep occupied, but I'm sure a visit to any tool merchants in the area wouldn't be out of the question! ;-)

Your suggestions welcome.

Cheers

Hunstanton is a bit run down and tired - it was a 1950s and 60s holiday resort. You're mainly in walking and birdwatching territory, all made a bit expensive and fashionable by Londoners who have either retired there or have holiday homes.

Beaches, walking and wildlife (mainly birds) are the main attractions. The main sandy (and shingly) beaches are away to the East of Thornham; you're more in the muddy bit, which is good for birds. Brancaster dunes and Holkham are more bucket and spade territory, although not very "developed".

Seal watching at Blakeney point is fun - it's a boat trip, so very jolly. DO take waterproof (or at least windproof) clothes, even if it's blazing sunny. It's different on the water.

I'm afraid (I just checked) you've just missed an opening slot for Gunton water powered sawmill, which is South of Cromer.

Oh - and do buy crab; Rick Stein says Cromer crab is one of the finest sea foods on the planet. (the fishermen in Blakeney beg to differ :) )

Many thanks BB

That all sounds perfect. Walking and wildlife are right up our street. Great nan normally has a cup of tea and a sleep in the car whilst we're walking, but sounds like we'll all have fun.

She also LOVES crab.

I think I might have had a boat trip to Cromer Island once before. Rings a bell.

What with being paid up members of the National Trust now I'm sure we will find more stuff to do as well.

Cheers

Wells-next-the-sea is my favourite seaside town in England...old fashioned harbour, then take the railway to the beach and Wells Wood. Lovely Scot's Pine wood leading into dunes, then out to a HUGE beach where the tide goes out for miles. You can rent a beach hut.

There's the North Norfolk Railway between Sheringham and Holt...or the Wells - Walsingham light railway.

Hi Mick, Sandringham House is not too far from Thornham.
You can have a look around the house and gardens if that's the sort of thing you want to do. There is also a visitor centre there for tea and snacks etc. and a lot of wooded areas for walking and for kids to have a kick about with a football on the grass.
Hunstanton and Cromer will be the two closest beach towns, but to be honest they are not brilliant. But there are also plenty of smaller beaches around at Snettisham, Heacham, Wells etc.
Although about a 50 mile drive from Thornham I would say Great Yarmouth is well worth a day trip particularly if you have kids.
It is a large beach town and there is plenty there to do for adults and kids.
Sheringham and the North Norfolk Railway could also be on your list for places worth visiting.

I grew up in Norfolk, loads to do
1/ sugar beet carving
2/ potato carving
3/ carrot carving
4/ Hill spotting, very rare
5/ curly tooth hillbilly spotting, not so rare
6/ Clothes shopping, I believe there be one of those fancy fashion clothes shops in Norwich
7/ Learn the local language, slantendicula, computa, buta, wata etc
8/ Trying to overtake the endless stream of tractors, never ending
9/ enjoy the fresh air, where I grew up it permanantly smelt of boiled sugar beet, which is a bit like sugary poo if your interested.

I have more but don't wish to bore you.

Aylsham near blickling is worth a look, but i would say the best place to look around would be Holt.

Thanks all for your suggestions.

Bob, I'm going on a spoon carving course in the woods next Saturday when we get home so I think I'll pass on the veg carving. Don't want to over do it :)

Go to Holt (Stephen Fry went to scholl and lived there), also try the PoppyLine steam railway from Sherringham (i think) to Holt (just dont wear a white shirt). Cromer is nice and the tank museum is fantastic. If that bores you just drink beer and be happy :)

North Norfolk is probably one of the few areas in England which can still be described as 'rural' (Lincolnshire and Hereforshire being the others)

As such it offers something which is rapidly disappearing in most parts of England, peace and tranquility, honest decent people (With a delectable local accent) and best of all a slight reduction in traffic density, not a lot but it is noticeable :)

What ever you do I hope you enjoy your holiday, everyone is entitled to a few days away from the incessant media hype and pressure of modern day life.
