Hi,

I'm hoping to make more use of hide glue in my workshop, and would like to try adding salt which I heard increases the open time. Does anyone know how much salt to add and what sort of open time I could expect? Also are there any drawbacks or problems with doing this?

Thanks

Marcus

I've tried it and didn't notice much difference but then again I wasn't sure of how much to add.
I think it results in a slightly weaker glue but that may not be as bad as it sounds, it could still be strong enough.
The best alternative is the liquid Fish glue sold by either Lee Valley or Kremer pigmente. Long, long open time.
Incidently it's not the same or the equivalent of Franklins Liquid Hide glue - that has additives to keep it liquid. The Fish glue contains just 1 preservative.
