Hi

Ive made a bench, however upon construction it has a fair bit of left and right wobble, what would be the best thing to solve this.

Thanks

Hi Alie, first you need another bolt in each of the top part of the legs through the large side board. Then the most important is a diagonal from the top corner to the lower corner, each side. Screwed to all legs as it passes.

Another way is to use a large sheet of 15mm ply and screw it to the back of the bench, make sure you screw into all legs.

Before you do any of this, make sure your legs are all squared off.

IMO that should do it. Good luck!

Do you mean something along the lines of this? would i need one on all the 3 uprights?

I was thinking of adding some cross rails on the top and bottom. would this help at all.

That's exactly it Alie, but I would put a brace on all four sides. Or as I said, if you want to use the space for storage, just put a full length of 15mm ply across the back, and ply coverl the sides as well. Do that and you won't need any braces. Or cross pieces.

Personally I would go the ply route, and fit a centre shelf as well, plus anything stored under the bench will help to dampen any vibrations.

Alie.
I used 3/4 plywood, screwed on the ends of my bench,as Tam says.
Really strengthened it up and also as Tam says you can put a shelf or two under :D

I'd just screw some sheet material to each of the ends (and the back if you have enough). It probably needn't be that thick, but I'd go for half inch at least. It will also help keep some of the shavings out of whatever you put on the shelf.

Cheers,

Dod

Hi Alie,

You can use 9mm, (3/82) ply if you enclose the sides and back. The ply will considerably stiffen the structure and form the basis of a useful cupboard. If you put heavy items on the bottom shelf that will improve the stability of the bench.
