Many things involving Facebook are nasty.

A (very simple) bit of Googling revealed this:

This is, apparently, a 'big deal' for those poor unfortunates... so if you use FacePaint(tm), or a Microsoft Windows 8 product, does it make any sense that you might receive this?

Given the news story (from Microsoft's site) I expect it is what it seems to be, a round-robin from Microsoft, but if it has any sort of attachment (which shouldn't be necessary if it's genuine), it is most likely to be a 'spear fishing ' attempt -- trying to trick you into opening the attachment.

I assume you run some sort of anti-virus software (most people do), so what does that tell you about the message? If in any doubt, just delete it. The advantage of email is that messages can be resent.

Golden rule: if in doubt, delete.

That Microsoft link I posted tells you what you need to know about the matter, I'd guess (if anything at all). It may be genuine, but it doesn't matter - read that web page and then, unless there's something you need to do, delete the email.

I skim-read the web page, and it looks like Microsoft are just doing a "CYA" operation - explaining any loss of access to Facepaint isn't their fault. Most grown-ups probably couldn't care less.

You probably got the message twice because you have registered two Microsoft products against the same email address, and they haven't bothered to check they already told you.

I use facebook, it keeps me in touch with the family and grandchildren who are spread over UK and I see them growing up through their pictures posted and their interests. One has just visited NY with her class and most probably would not normally correspond with widespread relatives any otherway, so FB does have a purpose for some of us. ( I have three daughters, 7 grandchildren 2 great grandchildren would involve a lot of private correspondence for her any other way in that instance)

I quite understand.

Mine are younger, but the eldest two are both married (quite young), and although one couple lives about 12 miles away across the city, the other two are on the US west coast. My wife uses Facebook a lot for those reasons (and #3 will shortly be off to university, either London or even further afield).

My concern with it is the same as with other similar companies -- poor ethical standards and a contract that basically removes all your rights to privacy, ownership of material, etc. Smallest has already been the victim of some particularly nasty online bullying, and has published stuff that she may regret later if she pursues her intended career.

You can warn them, but they won't listen.

It's always worth remembering that Facebook was basically created as a way for US college students to ogle members of the opposite ***. That's its core morality. It obviously doesn't bother most people, but it bothers me.

I'm old fashioned about such things.

Eric , I agree that is the downside, some of our teenage grandchildren will cringe in around 50 years time.

But then their kids could be even more explicit.
