Hi all

Picked up a saw at the car boot, confounded by the maker/retailer mark.

Looks like "Black & Milanda" or "Black & Milarsa". Seems a weird name and googling isn't helping.

Other marks are "Capital", "Cast Steel", "705" and "Sheffield", and a crown stamped on either side of the mark.

Seems to me that the 'Black & Milarsa", or whatever it says, has been stamped over the 'Capital Sheffield' mark so i wonder if that's the retailer and Capital the maker.

This had already earned it's place on my rack cos its not often my Google skilz fail me. lol

Thanks for any help

Thanks Andy @toolsntat

It seems, going by some maps linked to below, Capital steelworks was set up next to Slack Sellars & Co, in the workshops previously occupied by Dammemora steelworks. I wonder did Capital steelworks take stock from Slack & Selllars and put their own mark on top.

interesting maps

thanks for your help!

***edit***

Dammemora changed to Balfour post WWI and then to Capital
Arthur Balfour & Co.

Hi, have the same saw. Any more information popped up? Any idea about manufacturing date? Thanks

Simon Barley's definitive book on British saws lists Slack Sellars & Co at Capital Works 1957-1981. JCasssidy's saw has the "capital" stamp and logo, indicating it probably dates 1950s or later (note that early Slack Sellars saws from the 1800s into the 1940s, had a different logo featuring a bird and the word "speed")
