Hello thanks for letting me join. I'm new to wood work, my total experience amounts to 5 years of 1 hr classes at secondary school, so if I ask dumb questions please forgive me? I'm a full time carer for my wife so I've decided to start teaching myself using youtube video's & using palletwood to practice with.
I am making fair progress & growing in confidence, so I've set myself a target project of making an endgrain butchers block style chopping board. Can anyone please direct me in the West Midlands to someone who can supply food safe hardwood offcuts I could buy from please?
Thanks in advance Paul.

Paul, if you only want scraps, search locally for a woodworking club (carving, turning, whatever)
Every member will have bits of scrap planks in their hobby house.

I have a large crate of stuff, but I'm a bit too far away for you. (g)

+1 for Davies Timber,

they have a big bin of off cuts , might not contain hardwood in it though but if you ask them at the counter i am sure they will be ok for you to pick them up if you find anything suitable as they burn them when the bins get full.

They are very good for sheets good too and good price on their ply and MDF too. They extended their offering recently with a lot more hardwood and hardwood laminated MDF.

however i can't get their pricing on there website for hardwood as it doesn't specify a lenght anywhere only thickness and width.

Example Sapele is priced as £2.05 for 25x25mm but no idea for what lenght ????? would it be a for a foot lenght?

Good luck and welcome. Go careful with pallet wood unless its brand new, a lot of them are used to transport chemicals at some part in their life and we wouldn't want you growing extra limbs or turning green.

Well that price aint cubic feet, so I'm going to take a guess at *snip*

Edit. I do believe it's linear meters.

Welcome Paul,

Davies Timbers did not take too kindly to me going in & being vague when I went in years ago to get my 1st stock of oak - as a complete woodwork newbie. Perhaps I shouldn't base my opinion on the business on just one visit but don't expect too much helpfulness or patience from the counter staff.

If you have a car & want to practice on cheap, unseasoned, random sized oak & larch then go to see the nice folks at Ragley (Estate) Saw Mill in Arrow (Studley) as they have a scrap mountain. Coventry Demolition have wonderfully flat, nicely figured, kiln dried square edged oak & pine boards which would be ideal for cabinets, tables etc. Then Perry Bar Saw Mill have lots of other timbers & have nice staff so I am told ( I have not been there myself).. they'd be good if you wanted a small quantity of Acacia for a chopping board.

I've been once to Davies timber to buy some 4x4 posts to make a gate frame.

The guy who helped me was good and looked through the lot to find me stick that was straight and true as possible.

Me being a novice at the time I would have picked the first two at the top of the pile

That was my experience too. Very friendly and helpful.

As well as the offcuts bin mentioned earlier they also have a section for hardwood remnants of short lengths.

First bay on the left as you enter the alleyway/entrance.

Hi Paul and welcome to the forum. I'm sure I can find you some spare bits and being in Bromsgrove, you are only a couple of junctions along the M42 from me. If you PM me your phone number we can chat and make arrangements for me to driop them in to you.

At the bottom of each post, you will see thre boxes, profile, PM and e-mail and it's the PM that sends your message to the person and it doesn't show on the forum (just in case you didn't know)
