Hello all,

I recently joined, was glad to stumble across this forum as it looks right up my street! Thought I'd introduce myself.

I originally did a degree in architecture but after some twists and turns I'm working as a joiner/carpenter - I did a short informal apprentice, still got lots to learn but I'm teaching myself as I go along and taking every opportunity to learn from those older and wiser than me.

The wife and I recently bought a house in Tinsley, Sheffield, with a big separate garage (about 3.8m by 11m by 3.2m high) which I am turning into a workshop - I'll probably post my rough plans at a later date and ask for advice.

That's all for now, let me know who you are too!

Hello Alastair, and welcome!

The forum is an amazing place with all the information resource you could poke a stick at, and if you can't find what you are looking for just ask away. There are loads of talented and well informed folk here who are very generous with their knowledge!

That's a nice large workshop Alistair, good luck with it, and welcome.

Yes, I was pinching myself when we were able to get it it's a dream come true and very well built. the previous owner of the house renovated old fire engines as a hobby so built the garage specially, down the side of the garden.

Our original plan was to divide it in 2 and my wife would have back half as a photo studio. Now I'm hoping to use most of it and add an extension for the photo studio because once I get more workshop machinery, and with workbenches and materials storage, the more space the better.

Well, I have lots of dreams about things to do, like the extension, but not the money at the moment, maybe one day!

We're all in the your money position at times Alistair, just concentrate on the dream, you'll get there!

Thankyou Roy, thats quite encouraging. I feel like I have a mountain to climb to get where I want to be, and I am basically educating myself cos I couldn't find much out there for me.

I am getting advice and support from Sheffield Enterprise Agency (SENTA) who are very good. I completed a business plan, and they are giving me a £1000 grant. I've chosen the tools I want to spend it on and they are sorting it out right now - a Metabo bandsaw, Trend router, metabo belt sander, and cheapo planer (better then nothing for the time being).

I was recently visiting family in America and was inspired by the level of woodworking expertise over there. Got a load of back issues of Wood magazine off my brother in law, very educational. Their website is a goldmine too: http://www.woodmagazine.com

I'd previously thrown together some rough benches and shelves in the workshop and made stuff up as I went along. But I've now decided to make a sketchup plan of how i want it to be, and then make things nicely one at a time when i have the money - like racks, a decent bench, jigs etc.

If my own experience is anything to go by Alistair as soon as people know that you're into woodwork you'll have timber coming at you from all directions!

Not with me, I don't think! I guess newbies are asking this all the time, I figured there must be a forum topic on it somewhere. Thanks
