Hello. My name is Richard and I write to you from Canada. I hope that I can find a place to roost on your forum. I have been woodworking for a couple of years now and I'm having fun developing my skills. I'm looking forward to better weather here in Canada so that I can put in more shop time. The nights are just too cold for my unheated shop. I picked up some new tools and I'm just itching to try them out.

Welcome to the forum Richard. I guess there will be a few more along tomorrow to say helo, they are not all up at such an unearthly hour as me to see your post.

Welcome aboard, Richard.

Seeing your other posting about how you started woodworking, virtually the same happened to me after a young, but boisterous, no. 1 son decided to break his (not particularly cheap but, as I discovered, rubbish quality) bed on more than one occasion. Having had enough of fixing it, a trip to the timberyard and a carload of pine resulted in three substantial single bed bases for all the offspring. Over thirty years on, and a few new mattresses later, all are still in use and as good as new. Total cost for the three (beds) was under £50, say about $75. The kids, of course, have cost me a lot more!

Any pics. of what you have been making?

Cheers,

Trev.

Richard

Welcome to the forum.

I know what you mean about the cold, I lived in St Johns New Foundland for a couple of years back in the 90's.

Canadians are always good woodworkers, it must be all that timber you have over there. Don't worry about the timing, you should always be able to provide the last laugh.

Thanks for the welcoming words guys. I actually hail from the U.K. originally but I moved to Canada with my family when I was young. I sound Canadian until I've have a couple scotch with my cousin. I was asked about some of my work. I like to use reclaimed wood when I can.

I built two of these chairs from a douglas fir shipping crate. The plans were modified from a book from England.

I built this quilt rack from pallet wood. The plugs are scrounged walnut that I cut on my drill press.

Next is an oak and walnut quilt rack that was made for a wedding gift.(Don't look at my messy shop  )

This shelf is a reproduction of an 1850 Renfrew County Clock Shelf. I built this for an auction fund raiser.

These are a few of my projects. I'm no master but I am the popular guy in my neighborhood  . I hope I didn't bore you.

Before I go, I'll leave you with one more picture from last winter.

There is a road in this picture but you can see why nobody is on it.

Welcome Richard.

Excellent recycling there but I'd never even heard of a quilt rack before now. Well you live and learn :).

You'll find everyone here is very friendly btw.

p.s You can keep the snow... :p

Hi Richard,
Warm welcome to you. Which end of Canada are you? My family are all from Hamilton.
Nice work on the chair.

Regards
Lee. :D

Hi Richard,
Welcome to UKW - I surf several woody sites and IMHO UKW is one of the best. Everyone is friendly, knowledgeable, and polite.

Also nice to see snow, I'm originally from England but living here in Czechland now and we have three foot of snow outside also. I bought a little snow plough to clear the driveway to my workshop (Converted barn) but I find I need snow chains now to do the job properly.

What sort of night time temperatures do you have :?: Here it's minus 10 Centigrade at night (Not quite sure what that is in Fareneight) but only a few weeks ago it was minus 25 at night, Brrrrrrrrrrrrr :D

To Lee: "My family are all from Hamilton". How do you like that. Smithville is about 20 minutes outside of Hamilton as you head to Niagara Falls along the top of the escarpment. You have to ask your family about the Poultry Fest".

To Losos: Right now the night time temps are only around -10c. We had a very mild winter in my area although other places in Canada didn't fare so well. Usually things have been much colder.

I really want to thank everyone for the kind words. And I'll see you on these pages.

Hi Richard,
Is the Stoney Creek Dairy Still there. They did Icecream called 'Old tin Roof'. It was my favourite! I've not been over since '99. My Aunt works in the Dental office near the Dairy.

Lee.

The dairy is still there. You don't get as much variety in the way of sundaes but they still make their own ice cream. I havn't been there for some time but I have heard that it's not as good as it used to be. Every time my cousin come over here for a visit, the first place he (and his wife) stops is at the closest Tim Hortons.

Ha Ha, they must like talking to Police officers! Do they all still hang out there? :D

This should have been a chat room(lol). You often get the police stopping in for a drink. Most Timmies will give them their drinks for free if they are staying for a bit. Just don't make a joke about them and Hortons to their face. Not a good idea  . The first Tim Hortons was actually opened as a joint deal between a Hamilton cop and a Hockey player.
