Thank you for allowing me to join.

I am an absolute beginner, and I just bought my first new (that is, not passed on from someone else) drill, and jigsaw. I aim is to build a simple bookcase, and some wooden boxes.

Thank you for accepting me and I hope to learn from you, the learning curve looks steep but interesting!

Welcome. The main function of a jigsaw is to cut down sheet goods and general trimming. It's a crude tool. For accurate crosscutting try and get yourself a miter saw or table saw. You are entering the great black hole that is woodworking.

Welcome to the forum. Go for the wooden boxes first before you attempt a big wooden box (bookcase)

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I will definitely go for something very simple first, as you suggest! Do you have any good suggestion on where to find cheap / free-of-charge wood to practice? I was wondering whether pine pallets are any good? Just to practice cutting, drilling, joining, ....

Pallet timber is rough , full of nails and often warped. People usually want money for them believe it or not. You might be better off buying rough construction timber which will need planing and drying out but will be straight at least.
