Hello there everyone
I am new to this forum game so thought a general hello was in order.
I have not done much turning for many years but I am getting back into it now. I have done a fruit bowl and a shallow bowl at work, to get the feeling back. Enjoyed it so much that I have ordered a lathe to squeeze into my already cramped workshop.
I am looking forward to putting some pictures on and hopefully getting some advice.
(I love the snowman and pine trees!!!!)
Hope you all have had a good weekend

Welcome to the Forum and the world of spinny things in particular Rich B.

I dont know if I'm long enough a member to offer welcomes but i've been made feel so much a part of this forum that I lust had to say something.
I joined a few weeks ago after buying a small Draper lathe and after reading all the posts I could find I felt that I had made so much progress that I went out yesterday and bought a new SIP with 550w motor, 1200mm between centres,Variable speed control,+ all kinds of everything which I havent had time to figure out yet.
So you who has had some experience of turning are in for a real treat from these boys, I've never felt so welcomed and more importantly not afraid to ask a question in case it may be stupid (I suppose a lot were are). I just hope you get the same buzz as I do looking at there work . Sorry for the long winded welcom but it's just how I feel Regards Boysie39

Well that was a fantastic responce, thanks for all your kind and friendly words.
I have taken a picture of the shallow bowl for you to have a look at.

The fruit bowl is not finished yet because I can't get the tool rest into the bowl enough (curved rest is in the post!!!!)

Thanks again, I really feel part of something good.

welcome Rich and what a nice sheen to that bowl. I can't remember the last time I turned a bowl (other than it was some years ago - snowmen, skittles, pens etc. took me into spindle mode!) but it looks very well proportioned to me.

That's a lovely piece of wood there and you seem to have done it juste. Well done. Looks like you are managing to get rid of all tool marks and that's always a good sign. How deep is this bowl if you are having trouble?

Pete

Nice finish, and lovely looking rippled figuring :D
I have made dozens of bowls, and although I have a curved bowl rest, very rarely use it - the straight toolrest can get virtually anywhere the curved one can (although it's handy sometimes for working the base and side without moving the rest, for instance)

Good figuring on that Bowl Rich, if you don't consider it finished I hope you can remount it satisfactorily for any further work.

Nice I have got the picture in (been following very clear instructions from Adam, cheers mate)

The problem I have got with the larger fruit bowl is that I am using a Union Graduate and the banjo when turning on the right handside gets in the way. The gap between the flat bottom of the bowl and the edge of the tool rest is too great for me to control the tool.
I am trying to get a really flat bottom like the one you can see. I am sure that someone with more experiance could steady the tool, not me at the moment.

This forum business is great!!!!

I don't have that trouble at all with my lathe, It's a Perform. If it really bothers you I am quite happy to swap lathes :p
Pete

Rich, any chance you can give us a typical photo shot of your banjo/tool rest positioning problem, just in case someone has a pointer to help get over your problems, seems strange that a platter that shallow is giving problems on a Graduate.

Ha Ha Ha Ha
Don't get me wrong I am not complaining, she is a beauty!!!!
Not mine thou, works, I think my school swaped it for somthing with another school. It has been sitting idle for at least three years because of a dodgy switch. I had enough of looking at it doing nothing so got the switch fixed and I am away, hooked again after easily 15 years of not doing any turning. I have started a lunch time club with some of the kids and they have produced some nice stuff. There are loads of Union Gs in schools, thing is they are all three phase and sadly most of them are just used as sanding machines.
