I've been at it again this afternoon  I've gone for a heavy thick walled bowl with a curved down rim. The timber(Mark Placek identified it as Santos Mahogany) is very heavy and I wanted to keep this attribute. The piece has been sanded down to 600 grit with a couple of coats of cellulose sanding sealer and buffed by hand with woodwax22. This timber really is a joy to turn and finishes really well with little sanding.

Critique welcomed.

Cheers JT

I am biased as I like these heavy bowls. This one looks good and well balance. If I changed anything it would be to have a smaller base, not a lot but the concave part seems a bit out of proportion to me. Otherwise it's a beauty IMHO

Wouldn't fancy that dropping on me toes JT
Very nice looking bowl JT.
Nice shape and finish.
How did you get hold of the timber :?:

Thanks for your replies, they are much appreciated. TBH I wasn't sure about the curve of the side on this one, I thought it was a bit square but I must admit its grown on me :D

My uncle came up to visit and had picked me up a load of offcuts from outside a carpenters workshop near his house that were labelled 'free'. I got a couple of 2' lengths of this mahogony in amonst it(the rest is mainly bits of oak) bit of a result really 8)

I'm getting the bug for these heavy bowls, this was a piece of ash with a nice rotten black hole that was just begging to be a feature on the rim of a chunky bowl.

Now you're talking. I think I have some competition on the 'rustic' front. I love heavy bowls and love bits of bark and natural defects so what can I say.....apart from I wish it had been my wood

The only thing I might have done different is either follow the outside shape a bit more or made it thicker with the change in contour inside. That s personal taste though so ignore

Not sure what your seeing Pete, it has a uniform wall thickness on the sides but the bottom is hollowed deeper/thinner to make it more usable, is this what you are seeing in the grain? If so 10/10 for observation 8)

You have done a nice job with the ash, I love the grain patterns.
I enjoy turning ash, great smell!!!
Started a deep ash bowl last night, did the outside and took to work to finish off.
The heat of the car opened a split right across the foot and base. So now it is on the way to becoming a shallow bowl.

Love the top Mahog bowl JT - How such a simple design can be so beautiful.

Thanks Loz I've made 3 like it now from the mahogany, evryone likes them(family/friends) I've only got 2 left now though as my accountant took a liking to one of them. I gave it to him of course, no bad thing he has lots of clients visit him and you never know who may see it and may want one
