The glass on our wood burning stove cracked and I'm trying to replace it. It was held in place with some small Philips screws! Which unsurprisingly I've had to drill out. I'm going to tap the drilled holes, and was about to use some standard M6 bolts. But I'm guessing these won't fair too well either?
Anyone have any ideas?
Cheers

(FYI those cheapo taps from Screwfix are plain awful. They just about did one hole and are now knackered. I ordered some HSS ones that I've tried out (for another job) - and the difference is unbelievable!)

Gidon, I would imagine that the main reason you had to drill out the old screws is due to galvanic corrosion between the different metals in the screws and the door of the stove. Avoid screws made of lead as they might melt. Otherwise you'll be fine with any steel screws. Stainless might be a good choice but the best would be screws that are made from the same metal as the door. If this is cast iron that would be a problem.

You might look at a DIY auto parts store--do you have those there?-- for some anti-seize compound. It is commonly applied to spark plug threads to prevent the spark plug from locking itself in the hole.

As far as tapping holes, perhaps you know this but you should reverse the tap frequently to clear the chips. Also use some light oil to help lift the chips away.

Dave - well the threads just ripped - I'd left them soaked in oil. At least if I replace with bolts I can get a spanner on them. I wondered if stainless steel bolts would be better - may try and get some. Yep door is cast iron.
Yes we have car-part stores here - may try and get some of that too - thanks.
Yes I think I was doing the method correctly. It's just after one hole the threads on the tap had worn away!
Cheers
