Hi,

Do any of you know where I could get hold of a thread adapter from 3/4" 10 tpi to 3/4" 16 tpi? I have come across all manner of different sizes across the world via the internet, but not this one.

The Clarke lathe I picked up from Ian (thanks again) is not a CWL6B, but a CWL6, hence it not being 3/4" 16tpi.

In the meantime I shall attempt something other than a pen....pictures next weekend if all goes well. Or pictures even if it doesn't!

Thanks

Jez

Jez,

I hope someone comes along and proves me wrong but I think you may struggle with this off the shelf.

A case of beer and a call to a local machine shop may be your best bet as the formal price for a one-off along the lines you have in mind may equal the value of the lathe!

Also, a word of caution. To do this you will end up with the spindle extended beyond what it is designed for. This will significantly increase the load on the headstock bearings and I am not sure this lathe will like that much. You can try it and see but be aware of vibration as a possible hazard if you go down this route.

If you don't already have a chuck a better solution may be to get a chuck with a removable insert (or maybe a large one and something standard like M33x 3.5) and get a flanged boss machined up for your lathe. That way you will reduce added overhang and have a chuck that you can keep should you chose to upgrade.

Good luck
Simon.

PM sent.
But on a related topic, just in case it would help anyone else, I have a brand new spindle off, I think, a Coronet Consort machine. This has the standard 3/4 by 16 thread on one end, the bearing surface for the bronze taper bearing, and a LH thread on the other end. Don't know if it would fit anyone's machine, but if it might, PM me.

Most manufacturers of chucks make a 3/4 x 10 tpi
look at sorbys range, axminsters, turners retreat to name a few !!!
Do you have the impression that no one makes a chuck to go on it?

Ah, yes. The Patriot chuck will fit, but is a little out of budget at the moment! Although it does look fabulous....

I was looking for a spindle converter as I have found a jacobs chuck on a 3/4" 16 tpi thread. I can't find those, but if I have to splash out on a fancy chuck then at least it will last from this lathe to the next.

Cheers for the pointers.
