Preferably brass but don't really mind as long as it looks nice(ish)

M6 or M8 from 30mm to 60mm (ish)

Again, without wishing to do Philly out of what looks like a very promising new line in thumbscrews :lol: you don't actually need to use a screw at all:

This is one that I let Philly have at Yandles a couple of years ago...cost about 5p to make - Rob

Rob, that is really smart. I need to make some new guages - I don't suppose you have any blog posts/write ups on the making of that do you?

BB - there's an account on the Blokeblog here which might be of some interest. Essentially the stock is made up of four separate pieces laminated together with the wedge intact (suitably waxed) in the middle. When the glue's set, tap out the wedge and then cut the square hole for the stem...the saddle shown in the pic gives a more secure 'lock down' when the wedge is pushed in, but makes it a bit more fiddly to make. If can be left out if need be. The pin is just a hardened masonry nail ground to a cutting profile (Dremel or Proxxon is useful here) and again can be set either vertically or at 45deg as shown in the pic.
Paul C has made one of these and reckons they work well...I certainly use mine all the time, best part is the fundage expenditure is kept to a minumum - Rob

Here's one I made based on Rob's (not as nice as his )

I would say it's very important to include the little saddle - this spreads the pressure from the wedge in two directions. Works really well. You can set and lock it single-handed and a tap on the bench unlocks it.

I prefer wooden screws in marking gauges, I use one of these

I hope to god he's watching it to keep the peace with the significant other. We all have to do that from time to time. A good way of getting out of it is to have a little bit of back pain. That way you can go and have a lay down (with the laptop under your arm as you go)

PS. I still prefer the wheel type marking gauges. My most used are the ones MrEd made for me, but I also have a Tite-Mark for when I need the micro adjustability.

Btw, i watch eastenders because the mrs' does, but I certainly don't mind it, much prefer it to corrie or emerdale.

I have some hex bar if you want to make a screw, I also have some boxwood and a tap/die set if you want to go with wood...
