I managed it! I have joined the lathe club, after quite a few weeks looking for the right lathe as a price that I could afford, I picked this up last night

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0313946851

No detailed picks yet, but I think it was a bargain, came with a chuck (not the one pictured - a craftsmen? Lots of jaws and bits), a selection of chisels. Small faceplate, Instructions. The chap even threw in a few blanks (won't be going near them for some time).

The only thing missing is a center for the tail stock, (my local tool company does a revolving one for 24pounds is this about right?), and I left the drive belt cover there, I'm _hoping_ the chap will post it to me.

more photos to come as I try to set it up tonight, I have alot of questions!!

Mr very very very excited

Hi There Matt,
I see you are new to the forum as I am so welcome to woodturning.
I have been making shavings and ornamental firewood for almost 3 years and have developed an addiction for buying wood lathes of which 3 are in operation and 2 are in storage one waiting to be reinstalled and the other perhaps to be sold.
Enjoy your new experiences and remember if it all goes wrong it is only a piece of wood at the worst it can heat the workshop!!
Best regards,
Ian

Certainly a bargain introduction to the spinny world, many happy hours ahead of you, just don't fall for all the must have tool adverts until you have had a few months making shavings with the basics.

Looks like an Old Record Power CL

around 20 quid sounds right for a live centre,

46 quid for a lathe ! - Bargin !!!

Brilliant, Matt ... thats fantastic.
 :D :D :D :D

Many happy hours of woodwhilrling ahead !

You should be able to pick up a live centre easy enough off fleabay starting at around 10 roupees, as stated above ... like everything, there's varying degrees of 'quality' available... have a wee hunt around, and you'll get sorted out easy enough. :D

Don't know what MT yours is... here's a couple of 'typical examples' ...

Just to give the flavour.

Hope you really enjoy yourself with it ( well, we KNOW you will ! )
Well done Buddy.. got yourself a real 'steal' there !
nice one. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

I have just got hold of one of these as well after using (and knackering) a Perform CCl for 2 years. Quality is way up on the perform and the only thing that I miss is the variable speed though thinking about it, I'c had it a week and only changed speed once so far.

The spindle and morse are the same as for the Record and as said are much cheaper on line. Shop around, look for and on ebay as well sometimes see things cheap as it's a common size

Welcome to the forum Matt
definitely a bargain =D> =D> You have done well.
The morse taper for that is 1MT.

Super pleased, my belt drive cover is in the post - brill. Going to try and set it
all up on the bench this evening, so hopefully will get some piccies up. Proberly with a few "Whats this bit" type questions with it!

Just had a thought (that's at least 2 today, I'm improving) Make sure that you have a thread protector as the head stock is solid and to get a drive off you will need to use the thread protector. Found this out the hard way using one at the club.

Get back if you don't know what I am talking about

Pete

Holy crap! Where did my evening go? Now trying to sort piccies.

Thread protector? You've lost me, the threaded mount on the headstock
has flats on it so you can hold it still as you mount / dismount the faceplate or chuck, is that what you mean?

Lessons learnt so far (tools).

1. I do not know what ANY of the tools are supposed to do
2. They are blunt and I do not know how to sort it, I also suspect some are out of shape.
3. Some are homemade but weirdly I had the most success with one that looks like it has been made out of a file
4. I have no idea how to use that chuck

I think I need to find a local club

5. By heck its fun!!!!!!!!!!!!

Matt very confused but having fun

The spindle on the head block on this lathe is threaded to take a chuck or face plate. You should have a nut that goes on it when you use anything with a morse taper. Look at the end and you will see that at the working end there is a tapered hollow, the morse taper. On this lathe it is No1 so anything you buy that has a morse taper needs to be No1. On a lot of lathes the spindle is hollow right through and when you have a drive in this morse taper you knock it out with a special bar but on this lathe you must have the thread protector on. Unscrewing this then pushes the drive out. I'll see if I can find some info online or perhaps take some photos of mine if that will help

Hi Matt & belated welcome to the forum!

I came across your post on another thread and noticed you are in 'sunny' (slightly overcast at the moment) Ipswich.

I work in Ipswich and live near Framlingham, and also own a Record lathe, a CL4. I've been turning occassionally for about 18 months as I don't get a lot of time with full time job, renovating an old house and ill health for the last 8 months.

If you are interested in joining a local club, which I would highly recommend, I'm a member of the West Suffolk club which meets every third Tuesday near Stonham Aspel (just up the A140) and I know of another club which I believe meets every first Thursday at Dallinghoo (near Wickham Market, A12).

If you ever want the benefit of my limited experience feel free to PM me and we can arrange something.... happy to explain what tools are what, thread protectors, sharpening etc. If you ever get 'into' turned pens I'd be happy to give you some 'tuition', I guided my sister through making a pair as a wedding present last year and she'd never even picked up a chisel.

Happy turning,

Neil.

Thanks very much, I shall certainly be taking you up on your kind offer, I have finally managed to beat photo bucket into submission so have some photos.

A big collections of bits here.

Chuck (A precision combination chuck), another mystery here, no idea how it works - and surely it has the worlds worst manual?

I have NO IDEA what these mystery brackets are.

Chisels, an odd selection, I think the wee round fellas are bowl chisels, seems to be quite a variety of them, no sign of a roughing gouge though,
all seem pretty blunt, so a grinder jig and a better wheel for my grinder will have to be top of my list. the flat ones are a mystery as is the henry taylor flat one.

All setup, although headstock and tailstock are no where near aligned.

Some blanks that came with it, no chance of going anywhere near this lot for a while!!

First play time, lots of old pine kicking about so playing with that, odd shape at the bottom is due to it being screwed to a face plate, still not figured out the chuck! No1 son very happy with it as it has gone to school as a bowl for there stuffed dragon bernard.

I think I need to get my tools sharp as I seem to have alot of problems with tearing of the wood rather then cutting, also a proper roughing chisel would be nice.

Matt

Belated welcome to the forum.

£46.51 - Now that is a bargain!

As for the chisels, wiser heads than mine will probably have good advice on its way but ....
the flat scraper fifth from bottom on the second pic looks (and I could be wrong) as if it may have been ground from an
old file. If this is the case it is better put aside as the metal can be brittle and could shatter under load.

Have fun!

It is indeed made from an old file, I was unaware of that danger, so
thanks very much I was using it as a temp roughing gouge!

I shall "file" it away - ba ba doom! >groan<

Now which roughing chisel to get then?
