had my new stihl chainsaw and thought . give it a spin cut a load of blacktorn never turned blackthorn seems very hard wood there/s more there than i thought.holly tree next visit worth a try (hammer)

Holly is better felled in the winter if possible to maintain its whiteness. Before the sap rises.

I've turned blackthorn. Mine was as hard as nails too. It turned beautifully. Really interesting figure and some amazing colour variation. If I can figure out how to post a picky ill do it :)

These two pens are Blackthorn possibly root, I was out with the dogs and I got it after a car had ploughed into a Blackthorn hedge and made a big gap (way before I got there) and the piece was just laying there. I had no idea what it would turn like but I'm glad I gave it a try.

that "just stick it on the lathe and see what turns out" is one of the things I really love about wood turning....is sort of like roadkill.....but with wood :)
my sentiments exactly, you should see some of the wood my three dogs bring home with them, and I for one ain't going to take it from them.

One of ours will carry some huge size lumps of wood from the forrest and as soon as we get home she dumps them, I'm trying to teach her to stack them outside my workshop
