I was cutting some oak this morning to put in the log burner I have in the workshop and noticed a nice bit that I could turn. Well here it is. All comments welcome.

Nice salvage job :D
Got some lovely colouring in it,looks nicely finished, and like the way the shape of the rim leads your eyes into the bowl.

Very nice. What made you pick that particular lump over any other? I have not yet developed an eye forspotting likely pieces from the pile!

It's partly experience and partly blind luck I find. If it's a wood worth turning (anything that's free  ) give it a go. If you rely on wood that is guaranteed to be OK you are really limiting yourself IMHO. Only thing to watch for is if it's salvaged look out for nails etc as these play havoc with the tools. Worst that happens is that you get a bit of practice in, best is a nice piece like this.

Thanks Pete, I must admit that I have not had the problem with nails, staples, barbed wire. Always a problem from hedgerow timber. I do have a hand held scanner which if I not 100% sure it gets the scan treatment.
