Turning MDF into gold in a northern town
After being knocked out by Rob Woodbloke's gorgeous cupboard on legs, and suppressing fantasies of doing such fine work, I returned to reality this week with another of my masterpieces of MDF engineering!

This was a bit of a challenge - a distinctive gothic arched alcove in a cottage just behind my workshop.

Got the bottom half in...

Time to lift the top into place...

Phew! That was lucky!!

There are twenty of these cottages in a row - all with the same funny alcove in the front room.

I feel a leaflet drop coming on...

Looks good Dan, from the title I wondered if the unit was going to be lots of columns and may be bats hanging in it.

Looking at the wall, does it really have that belly in it just above the mantel piece or is there some sort of optical illusion taking place? :-k

I find it encouraging to see the speed you knock these out at. If that was my house and I was doing it, it'd have taken me months of planning, sketchup, forum posts, cursing, sweating, etc, etc ;)

There is always a time lag between taking an order and actually making the piece. In this case it was four months - I am currently up to six months!

I tend to find that by the time I actually get on to a job, any technical problems have resolved themselves in my mind in the intervening period - almost sub-consciously.

So then its generally just an hour or so with a pencil and paper sketching it out, working out a cutting list and Bob's your uncle!

Its like anything, though. The more you do, the quicker and better you get at it.

Cheers
Dan
