A friend of mine is raking down a Eucalyptus tree and has offered to give me various lengths.
My question; is it any good for turning?

Thanks for looking

Thanks for the reply, it was concise and to the point! :-D

Thanks also for the link, I'm sure as I visit more and more I'll start to find my way around.

I was given a few small logs of eucalyptus 2 weeks ago. I have sealed the end grain with knotting solution and they are set aside to dry. only time will tell if they split or not.
I did saw a small blank from one of the logs today and will try a couple of wet turned bowls too to see how they dry out.

The only chance of success with eucalyptus (gunnii or similar) seems to be to turn it very thin (2-3mm maximum) quickly while it's very green and then stand back and watch it contort as it dries.

I will turn one half of the section very thin as suggested and the other I will leave the walls about 3/4 -1" thick.
I will coat both bowls in diluted PVA glue solution and store them in shavings to see what happens. I will post the results in due time.

Hello ABY,,

Got hold of some cut down from a local churchyard which had been donated for firewood,,,,roughed out a bowl thinking it would speed up the drying process,,, it sure did "cos it went all over the place,,,no chance of using it "cos the dovetail mounting looks like a chickens ar"e,,,,
Should have used it for firewood ,,although the original recipient said it wouldn"t burn in his strawburner an" you could get rid of bodies in that,,,,,
