Hi guys,

I am now able to buy a chuck for my perform lathe. This is the best deal I have seen so far on the web. As far as I can tell I need a 1x8tpi thread but my lathe isn't mentioned amongst those offered at this size. Thought I better check before parting with any cash.

Chas, you used to own one of these lathes so I am counting on you to know the answer at least here.

If anyone knows of a better offer anywhere or that this company is best avoided please let me know

Pete

I looked at a lot of web pages then kind of gave up and bought the axminster chuck deal with case and accessories.

http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-Axminster-Woodturning-Chuck-Package-363274.htm

Fitted it to the lathe and looked at it...not actually used it yet. Looks the part, runs true and comes with quite a few useful looking jaw sets and the case whilst a bit impractical keeps the dust off.

Not used it because I'm still fitting out my workshop with cupboards etc. and am scared if I do anything too interesting I'll never get it done :)

1" x 8tpi spindle thread is correct.

See here

It is also listed in the service book.

Super Nova is good value for money IMO.
I had the earlier version and found it easy to use. Although the tollerances are not as tight as say an Axminster top of the range it is more than adequate for woodturning, It has a good travel range (better than the Axminster by 5-10mm) and is less of a fiddle to fit jaws etc.

Just been trawling through the posts and Supanova seems to win the day. best but I can find is from Turners Retreat. Price inc.VAT equals all the others I can find and it's free postage. Don't know good stores from bad though so if anyone knows anything about this one I'd be grateful for info.
Must get it soon. SWMBO is nagging me to get a chuck and make her some 'bowls without holes'

The most you should pay for a Supernova is £129.00 inc vat

Haven't found one at that price but have just ordered one for £131 with free postage, close enough.

Out of curiosity where would I find it at that price?

at a guess... ASK tools...

£131 sounds well within the ball park, at £129 it may not include free p&p...

Turner's Retreat ... dealt with them before (lathe and accessories) and found them very good... once you're on their mailing list you should get to hear of any offers they have... plus they'll send a new catalogue each time they publish a new one... but as with any dealer, always compare others' prices to get the best deal

Hi Graham,

I spent a couple of hours shopping around and found it as low as £119 but then you notice that either that didn't include VAT, or postage was added extra or the worm grub wasn't included....The one I've gone for was the best deal I could find and seemed a reasonable site.

Sod's law (as opposed to Oldsod's law) someone will now tell me of a special deal that is going on somewhere....

Pete

I knew it!! As soon as I hit the confirm button I knew that there would be somewhere where I could get it cheaper. Never mind. As long as no-one comes up with a 2nd hand one for a fiver....then I realy would say rude words!
