Goblet work in progress - FINISHED

OK, its not finished yet, Still some refining of the shem/foot, However my main concern is my captive ring isn't very ring shaped, how can i fix this ?

I didnt undercut it very well, and so now has more of a teardrop crosssection, than a circular crosssection.

ps - no captive ring tools in this house, was done by turning a bead, then undercutting with pull cuts with a small spindle gouge.

hi loz you can improve it by using the stem as a sander to sand the internal profile of the ring- wind a piece of abrasive around the stem away from you, so that as you sand the overlap joint does not snag the ring- you may need to tape a piece of the abrasive somwhere just to hold it on.

Hi Loz.

:idea: You don't need ring tools to make rings. Make a couple of ring cutters using old 'Allan' hexagonal keys. Grind the short end down gently so as not to lose the temper, make a small wooden handle for them. Just grind the tips like a skew scraper end with the point closest to the ring.

Begin as you did with a bead, then take the new scrapers and slowly work from each side building the shape until the ring breaks away. Then onto Georges idea of the abrasive wound onto the stem to finish off.

Hi Loz.

Don't be sorry mate, it's my fault for not explaining properly. :roll:

No photos I'm afraid, but if you can imagine looking down on a skew lying on its side, you have one long corner and one short corner. This is what your trying to grind onto the end of the Allan key.

You lie a key down so you have the 'L' shape, one right and none left. On each you will have the top face ground flat, then grind a slightly angled end on each so that the long corner is closest to the handle side of the end. Doesn't have to be a fierce angle just a bit so the end is less than 90deg. The idea being that as you cut around the ring segment the pointed corner will cut a little deeper than the short, so as you break it loose you should have less wood to clean up. Once you have the top shape just grind a little off the bottom as if sharpening a scraper, which is all this is really. In future all you need to do is rub the tip on a oil stone to sharpen.

Very easy to use, you can make them with steel wire but they don't last as long as Allan keys. I have got a couple of sets of ring tools, but also have a few of these made up ones for the smaller rings.

I made one of thoes ring Goblets did everything as seen on you tube video formed the ring and taped it to cup while I finished the foot finished everything on the lathe . When I took it off the lathe and stood it up the bleeding ring fell off I had made the foot too small.
But I had a nice ringed goblet minus the ring. REgards Boysie.

I made one of thoes ring Goblets did everything as seen on you tube video formed the ring and taped it to cup while I finished the foot finished everything on the lathe . When I took it off the lathe and stood it up the bleeding ring fell off I had made the foot too small.
But I had a nice ringed goblet minus the ring. REgards Boysie.
