HI,

Turned this lump last night, i couldn't bring up the tail as the bowl was too wide, and didn't snug when stuffed with paper towel etc,

What do you use ? - i have heard mention of rubber live centres, Would this work for supporting a goblet ? - where can i get one of these ?

Its so thick at the stem as it was bouncing around, even with light cuts,

SWMBO called it a Last Supper cup.

ps - Mahogany with friction polish finish, only down the 280 grit paper. ( as i have run out of finer doh )

I use the Super 32 live centre which can be seen here
The revolving faceplate lets you turn any shape to use as a live centre, and you could then cover that with router mat or similar

Thanks Duncan, but 60 odd Sterling is a bit steep ! - Was looking for a thriftier solution

Turn yourself a series of wooden domes or shallow cones to fit OVER the revolving tailstock centre. Place a piece of thin foam or other packing to protect the finished cup edge.

I have never used a support for the cup when turning the stem, I turn the inside, and work back on the outside from the end, bit at a time to leave as much bulk as possible at the chuck end as I go.

Thanks Guys,

I'll try and turn some tailstock "covers" as Chas suggests.

i dont understand why you had a problem,

I've been turning since Jan

I did the hollowing first, then the cup shape, then moved to the stem, however got a little nervous with the flex on the stem.

Maybe just newbie nerves ?

I did try to bring up the tail as support, i saw in a book to stuff the cup with paper etc, and then bring up the tail, but maybe as the cup was shallow, i didnt get the support i expected, and thus flex.

Or maybe too much pressure on my cuts ?

Dunno - but im learning everyday..........

and appreciate ALL feedback from you guys.

The only time I bought the tail up in that situation I over did it and broke the stem.

I'd put it down to Nerves Loz - we all get 'em.

Nice looking Goblet Loz :D
I stuff the bowl of my Goblets with a rag.
I roll up the rag as tight as i can making sure all loose edges are safely tucked away and use tape to hold it together.
Carefully push the ball of cloth inside making sure that it as central as poss.
Bring the tailstock up into the rag and rotate the goblet making sure that it is centralised. If the ball is off center you will get the bounce you describe. So bring the tailstock off and re-locate it until it is running centrally.
There was a good video clip somewhere showing this method but i can't find it

If your kids have one of those sponge tennis ball sized balls, you can pinch it, compress it into the bowl and bring the tailstock up - it can help when turning a thin stem......
