What is current thinking on the best non-spray gloss finish that is able to withstand some heat (like a table top)?
Thanks - any particular product recommendation?Short oil polyurethane varnish is always a tough finish. You do though need good brush skills and ideally a dust free atmosphere in which to work and to allow the finish to cure without attracting debris into the wet film. Slainte.
I've used a variety of solvent-based (oil) varnishes over the years. They generally all perform similarly in terms of wear, durability and ease or lack of ease of application, the last factor generally being governed by user technique or skill. To name just one, this stuff available at Wood Finishes Direct (and other sources) is good. What you need to look for if you go down the oil (solvent) varnish route is that the stuff is a 'short oil' type, i.e., it's labelled as an interior varnish and not labelled as a yacht or exterior type (long oil [soft and flexible]), and to see that the tool clean up description mentions things like brush solvent/cleaner, turps or white spirit as the stuff to remove varnish from bristles prior to a final wash out of the brushes with detergent and warm water.
