The two books I have are:-

Collins Complete Woodworkers Manual and The Technique of Furniture Making by Ernest Joyce. They are a little dated in their presentation, but are a wealth of information.

Gary - both these books, in my view is about techniques rather than design, Joyce's book being by far the better. I view it as the standard text on 'how to'. A book on how to design furniture is a completely different kettle of worms. Firstly, I would recommend having a look at the numerous books available in woodworking book clubs (GMC do a good and very comprehensive assortment of woodie books).

Secondly, I think that a basic understanding of proportion as applied to furniture is very useful in trying to get to grips with design. If you need to get one book though on design, the essential text is David Pye's 'The Nature and Aesthetics of Design' - Rob

The two design books that I would not be without are

The Wookworker's Guide to Furniture Design - Garth Graves - Stobart Davies
Practical Design Solutions and Strategies - Taunton Press.

If you've got more money to spend then Taunton's Complete Illustrated Guides to Furniture and Cabinet Construction, and Joinery are also well worth having.

I particularly like the Fine Woodworking book Practical Design.

I haven't read or seen this volume, but from the cover, this looks like another 'techniques' book rather than a book on 'how to design' - just a thought - Rob

I'm a little confused here gang.

Nick suggested- Practical design solutions and strategies by Stobart Davies.

Philly's link leads to- Practical design: Solutions and strategies (essentials of woodworking) by Fine Woodworking.

Are these two books the same book by different publishers/printers or, are they two different books?

Nick suggested the Taunton Press book, which is the same thing as Fine Woodworking, so Philly and I are in agreement.

The Stobart Davies book is a different one.

Thats OK Philly. Now all we have to do is work out whether its a case of great minds or fools. :?
