Just heard that a Russian Freighter has lost 1,500 metric tonnes of timber off the coast of Sussex! Anyone ready for some beach combing.

...again?? A similar thing happened last year and the beaches were covered in timber - people were told they couldn't take it though...

Aye, and there are plenty of warnings that its a criminal offence to take it  Shame, because I cannot believe the original owner or the shipper will pay for the salvage, suspect most of it will be recycled or dumped after being cleared from the beach. Anyone know whether salvage ever gets auctioned off?

Steve.

Coming in at Ramsgate as well.
It is not illegal to collect it as long as you declare it to the receiver of wrecks. They notify the owners (currently still the shipper) who can either collect it from you - making suitable restitution for any work involved in saving it from further damage, storage, etc. They may also decide that it is of no further use to them and inform you to keep it. (As happened with the BMW's and a fair bit of the timber last time around.
The only way you can be prevented from touching it is if the councils/foeshore owners invoke local bye-laws and shut the foreshore.

Thanks laird, thats interesting. The one problem I can forsee however is that if I were to salvage any, I would need to cut it to get it home and store it safely before informing the receiver of wrecks. Knowing my luck I would get done for criminal damage as well as theft! Think I will leave well alone to be on the safe side.

Steve.

Don't cut, snap just clear of the length you need, damaged coming ashore  Joking apart always obtain the form from the receiver before collecting, fill all details in (apart from the section that covers just what you actually collected) and take it with you in the vehicle/on the boat. Show the form if asked. Can you tell I live on an island ?

Saw this this morning. Wish i lived closer...

Do you? I'm prety certain it's softwood, tho none of the reports have said either way. I wonder how much useable timber would be left in each plank. If I had the right transport I might be tempted to go and have a look tomorrow, it's only an hour down the road.

As it was being exported from Sweden,I agree with you - most probably pine or larch, and by now,of very little value :(

Andrew

I'd say it was worth it if you had a woodburner, but doesn't softwood give off lots of smoke?

Main problem is tar (resin?) which in turn makes you susceptible to chimney fires, which are not nice DAMHIKT
