I've finally had a clearout of my oak offcuts. I don't know if they are of any use to anyone. Probably only useful for small projects or long thin projects. Most of it is not planed. Being oak there is usually some defect or other in most pieces. It's not worth using a lot of petrol to pickup so really only worthwhile to someone in Devizes area of Wiltshire. If no-one wants it I will be feeding it to my stove in the near future.
PM if interested.
Cheers
Malcolm

Hang on to it, and make something from it!!!

I think I would really struggle to make those pieces from this wood. I might be able to make a few panels but there is not much 2" stuff for the framework. These offcuts have been taking up valuable space on my racks for between 1 and 3 years so that I have to put new deliveries on the floor. I also have a load of similarly useless (to me) iroko which I'll be getting rid of next. I make windows, doors and stairs and such like so although I try to find a use for offcuts, under a certain size I can't use it.

There are only a few 2" pieces. Sorry I don't have a stocklist but it is mainly 1". Certainly not worth a trip over from Kent.':)'

I might have a plan for this and will be passing along the M4 on Sunday....

It does sound like I might need to start asking questions about planes though since a P/T is out of the question at the mo :(

How hard is oak to work with? I've a plan along the lines of a full length mirror surrounded by shelves and cubby holes for all of the girlie stuff currently all over my bedroom due to a lack of space for a dressing table.

I promise not to paint or stain it purple :p

Charlotte,

Oak is not hard to work. It is generally well behaved (that is its grain is predictable and its not very prone to tearout, it doesn't move much when sawn - if it was seasoned properly.)

Because it's a tough wood, it withstands the various knocks and scuffs a job will collect in a small cluttered workshop better than most woods.

Charlotte,

it is a physically hard wood, and it is prone to some nasty splinters, but it isn't particularly difficult to work with. I should snaffle this pile if I were you, before anyone else has it!!

BTW, don't use the paler portion of the wood...........sapwood........

I realise chris may have beaten me to it but i'm near devizes , have transport and can pick up more or less any time.

you have a pm from me too

Cheers Pete

Hi Chris - Chill

For some reason I don't seem to have received your PM but I have offered the oak to BigSoftMoose as he is just up the road to me. The value of the wood is not worth a long journey.

Sorry,

Cheers
Malcolm

malcom - thats great i'll definitely have it and i'll pick up tommorow - i'll give you a bell in the morning to fix a time.

chris - as a "consolation prize" if you want any green wood / logs - if for example you turn or carve, I can probably sort you out with some (cherry/ash/spalted beech etc). Pm me if interested.

indeed - or a coffee table frame , a small turned table , several clock faces , a couple of trellises, some gates , a few pen blanks (and whatever else i think of)

a big thankyou to malcom - they'll certainly be put to good use
