Shame about the lack of chainsaw safety trousers and boots on either of them. That saw sells for around £1000 over here (probably cheaper in the US) and if you can afford that then £100 for even basic leg protection isn't much more.

Interesting to watch.

I was quite honestly frightened also by the second guy holding the end of the mill and how close his legs were to the back of the chain, although he was holding the mill which helped I guess, but still.... !

Was a shame to see so much of a turning blank that size going to waste as shavings, I've done a few similar in walnut and using a coring tool would have aimed to get at least four bowls, maybe five, out of a blank that size.

On the positive side though, many folk would just have chunked up all the timber for firewood, so nice to see it being put to good use, and I think I need to upgrade my own saws to one of those beasties :)

We often have a 2nd person help at the start and end of the cut by holding the end of our mill like that but always wearing safety gear. Once the cut is started we usually get a better finish with just one person operating the mill as one person can control it better. Sometimes you need a bit of assistance when going through a side branch or other feature. With a good sharp chain and the log sloped sufficiently it's better to work on your own.

We're also about to get a slightly shorter bar, which is obviously much safer on narrower logs. Also more powerful as the chain is shorter.

If you're thinking of a new saw for planking - we manage ok with a Stihl 660 with 30" bar. If you're getting it specifically for planking you can get one with a different oiler which allows more flow to the bar.

It surprises me that Frank hasn't shelled out for a coring system given his interest in engineering. I'd half expect him to build his own.

Ahhhh...happy days.
Haven't used one of those in years. Used to work for a tree surgeon in Cornwall and did loads of planking. Had an 084 power head that was awesome and had a husky dummy head on the other end.
Only bummer was sharpening it!!!!!!!!!!...........dom
