Why not do as Pekka Huhta suggested and try a section for a few weeks and if you had a problem or it wasn't used, remove it I think enough people here seem to want a separate section for selling...

Noel's already answered that one.

It's been asked many, many times before, sale and want that is, but there's little need for it. It simply wouldn't justify the extra cost (server wise) and the time taken to moderate another forum. Over the past few years For sale or FTAGH posts have been maybe once or twice a month at most and I don't believe a specific forum would encourage additional traffic.

The rules for posting a FS ad in General WW or in another forum is simply to discourage one off members trying to flog something and then contributing little or nothing to the site.

With regard to self posted 'Bay links this is not Loot or someother free ad publication. Of course the exception is when a member wishes to draw attention to an eBay sale purely for "rubber necking" purposes and further discussion.

And thats it in a nutshell.

If you have something to sell put it in the general woodworking section, it can't be any simpler can it :D

As I mentioned earlier if you look at the "for sale" over the last 3 months it's pointless having a seperate section.

And as for " a war between generations" what the hell is that about  ..........

I've kicked up one big phpBB forum and moderating several over here, and I can't see any difference on the actual work in moderating or keeping up the forum if it has one section more or less. Actually I have noted that splitting the discussion to several sections does help. The traffic on "my forum" (Puuvene.net, Finnish woodenboat forum) isn't as big as here, but there are just about the same 2000 members over there as well.

Creating a section takes about two minutes and it's just the same time to remove it. How about giving it a try for a couple of weeks? If it works, OK, let's be glad that we invented something new and useful to the forum. If it's too much trouble, just delete the whole section and that's it.

So if it's a similar system I can't see what all the aggro would be?

It has long been the view of all moderators, and Charley the owner, that there will not be an increase in the number of forums. The moderators quite often have more work than we can handle.

Historically when we have merged or replaced a forum the title has been put to a vote for members. IIRC, none of the suggested titles have ever included a for sale/wanted forum.

When the next vote comes up you could suggest a for sale/wanted forum.

In the meantime, imho, the current method works very well.

Why wasn't this said in the first place, this would have stopped this thread at the begining???

Neil,

If you are short of moderators then I'd be happy to volunteer. I can't claim any exotic webmastering skills but I'm usually lurking most evenings and weekends and would be willing to help out with running a forum that has helped me a lot over the last year or so.
As regards technical inputs, my main experience is in electrical/electronic/mechanical topics and I've been dabbling in woodwork & DIY for 30 years or more.

Let me know what you think.

Bob

As Neil has mentioned and I mentioned some posts back there is no demand for a FS / Wanted forum at present. That's not to say there'll not be one in the future, but not at present. Now, I'm not ignoring those posts that favour a dedicated section but quite simply they are so few FS posts per month and even fewer wanted posts in the GW section. To me that indicates precious little demand. Sure, it's nice to scroll though classified adverts or the 'Bay if only to pass the time or perhaps find something that may catch your eye or even just to keep up with prices / trends but again I really can't see any demand.
If there is a significant increase in FS/Wanted posts in the General section the issue may be looked at. For those that have mentioned that they want something or have something to sell then start posting.
Moderating does take a large amount of our free time, more so as the forums continue to grow. and we currently have maybe 30 spammers a week to contend with too and as Neil has mentioned a dedicated sell/want forum could well increase that number.
Rgds
