go on, why does the side come off?

Well I could blag you and say that it's a one-off, custom made by LN...

But I doubt you'd believe me :lol:

It is a "rabbett" plane - ie the blade extends to the side of the plane body once the side is removed. Used to clean up tenon cheeks right up to the shoulder, etc. With the side on, it works like a normal block plane.
