AXMINSTER CM1903 Bench Morticer

1/2Hp motor, up 5/8" (16mm) chisel capacity.

Perfect working order. I'm only selling this as I have bought a bigger capacity machine and I can't see me needing two morticers.

I have had is from new and only given it light intermittent use - hardly a mark on the paintwork and no rust to be seen anywhere.

This machine is from the earlier Axminster 'blue' range and features a very rigid cast iron dovetail column with adjustment for any wear.
This is far superior to the modern ones that run on steel tubes and have no adjustments.

I'm asking £65 This machine is very heavy and impractical to pack & post so it need to be collected from Romsey - SO51 postcode near Southampton.

Any questions please ask

Bob

I had one of these machines and saw Bob's mortiser last weekend. I can vouch that it's a good piece of kit  - Rob

This could be an idiot question - how do you position the wood to be cut? The bigger ones have an x/y table but this doesn't seem to ....

Thanks

MIles

There is an adjustable fence that defines the front to back position of the workpiece and a clamp that holds it vertically when withdrawing the chisel.

One the tip of the drill bit has started in the wood, that is all you need to hold it. For longer mortices, you just slide the workpiece along against the fence and plunge again.

Max capacity from fence to drill centre is a gnats over 70mm.

Thanks for the endorsement Rob! Sorry there is no commission for referrals though

So, Bob, what have you bought to replace it with??? Did you manage to find a nice, solid lump of cast iron? :)

Hi Olly,

I'm afraid it is still imported cast iron
It is made by Salida who made the smaller Axi one.

I has the same rigid dovetail column as the one I'm selling, a big X-Y table and a 1hp motor. The sort of thing I can get fence posts onto etc

Hopefully should take up to 3/4" chisels which I have already and maybe even larger.

Sadly it is red with rust and not looked after in the same way as the one I'm selling and nearly every loose item is missing but I can make the missing parts easily.

Don't suppose you're ever coming round Staplehurst way?

I'd be tempted but its a bit of a trek :? And I just looked at chisel prices  Might mean I finally finish one of my projects which is on temporary hold because I cant face the 24 M&T joints required....well, its a good excuse to get a new tool isn't it?

Not going to be easy to get it to you.

I may be going from Swindon to Chingford on Thursday so could get it part of the way there - would that be of any use? (assuming that Alex S would be happy to be a waypoint - big assumption! :))

Thanks Miles. That might work. I'm still waiting to hear back from Dan K.

I'll get back to you.

Cheers

sorry, watching the political drama

PM sent bob :)

thanks for the offer miles, though the mention of Swindon triggers a thought... the beloved MIL lives near you in Highworth, so there's possibly a drop-off that could be done there...I guess we need to hear from Alex next

if miles picks it up from bob/alex, i can get it from miles' gaff to highworth for you

a ukw style relay ;)

Highworth is pretty close - if Bob gets it to me then it will be easy for you to collect from me or I could even pop it across... There's no way that I will be able to get down to Bob to pick it up in the near future though (sorry)

Romsey is about an hour south of me , so if it will help you and bob out i'll go get it and drop it in highworth if you pay for my deisel - wont be til next week at the earliest tho

(that's directed at dan obviously not miles)

or if bob is travelling up into wiltshire at all we could make an RV or arrange a drop off with another member.

Good morning Dan, Miles & Moose,

The excitement of last night's event sent me to bed early so am trying to clear a path through the offers of help.

I think that although Miles offer to get it to Chingford is very kind, it will be a bit of a ruddy blush to get the machine to Miles today in readiness for his trip.
The Highworth angle sounds more promising and I will PM Dan to explore that further as he has suggested the further option of visiting me when he next visits Highworth.
If that does not work, I can get it to Highworth or take up Moose's offer both for the cost of the fuel.
I'll see what Dan says.
Over to PMs from now on to save clogging the forum.

Bob
