Flu

I have always been very dimissive of peoples' claims to be suffering from flu.

A GP friend of mine memorably told me that most people contract flu only a very few times in their entire lifetime, and that the vast majority of 'flu' victims are merely suffering from a bad cold.

Well this week I have had flu!

For two whole days I could not even move without excrutiating pain. The house has been heated to 85 degrees and I have been wrapped in 5 or 6 thermal layers. Even with two duvets on the bed I was shivering with freezing cold. Meanwhile I was sweating like a pig.

I have had a constant throbbing headache and a temperature of nearly 104.

The worst symptoms have now abated but I am coughing my guts out. I really need to get back to work tomorrow but I just don't know if I will have the strength.

So please, unless you are suffering from symptoms as extreme as this, do not claim to have flu!

Because of my lowered immune system (a side effect of strong pain killers), I suffered from real flu 4 times in 2007/8. Culminating in a worrying bout of pneumonia. My doctor suggested the flu ***. This last year I've not had so much as a heavy cold, until this week. Daughter got it, wifey got it and then it hit me. So the *** really does work and you can set your clock by it, 12 months to the week. I'm hoping it clears up by Weds. [-o<


It really hits you. The dizziness and muscle fatigue is what gets me.

My son had his first ever bout of Flu last year. A strapping six ft two healthy lad and it floored him!
'I thought Flu was a bad cold!'
Because of my cancer the GP advised the '***', and despite my son having it I remained clear, worth visiting the GP IMO.

I had a bout of Measles Flu last year - some flu strain which had mutated and had something to do with the measles outbreak in this area last year.

I was knocked out for about a week, but still felt rough 4-6 weeks later. Definitely the one and only time i've ever had flu.

Brad - get yerself back in the 'shop and some MDF offcuts put in that woodburning stove.

Like Brad I was laid up some years ago,pains everywhere, sweating,coughing, thought I was dying. Doctor came and said I had flu "But I've had flu before" I said "and never felt like this"
"Then you've never had flu before, just a nasty cold" he said.
I've never claimed to have flu since.

I had the gastric variety of flu 3 years ago, couldn't move from bed except to eject something, plus temp and hallucinations. My low point came when I struggled up again to be sick in the small hours and as I was waiting to throw up realised it was going to come out the other end as well. Took the lesser of two evils and sat on the bog whilst throwing up on the floor.

So yes I agree, you only get real flu very, very occasionally in your life and it is wholly unpleasant

So perhaps it wasn't just the flu that was making me shake...

How old do you have to be to get it? 50?
If so I'm sorted for next year!

To get it free on the NHS I think you have to be 'at risk' Although, I think you can pay for it, about £30 IIRC. Worth it IMO

I think it varies privately, locally it's £15 I believe.

If you are willing to fork out the small fee £7-9 some supermarkets pharmacies dispense it.
Our doctors will dispense it for a small fee if you are not automatically entitled.

i'm diabetic and get the flu *** free(at risk group) every yr now and it works, since i 've been having it no colds snivels nothing , three days ago i had the swine flue *** as well all on the nhs free wife had to pay about a tenner this yr for her flu *** in the local supermarket morrisons . hc

Well this bout has cost me a week's work in the run up to Christmas. I could have paid a grand for a *** and still be in profit...

I will definitely be getting immunised in future.

Take care Brad, it really knocks you for six in the following weeks. Don't throw yourself back into work too hard or else you'll feel wiped out very quickly. You will need to pace yourself over the coming weeks. I have been amazed how long it took to get back to normal, the twice I've had Flu (as opposed to man-flu )

I've got four big jobs to get finished in time for Christmas; a kitchen and a TV cabinet, and two bedrooms. I am going to speak nicely to the bedroom customers about delaying until the new year. After all, who needs new bedroom furniture in time for Christmas?

It doesn't solve the problem of the cash flow being savaged, though!

I was hoping to spend January building my own new kitchen...

... if only I'd had that ***.

You folk in paid employment don't know how lucky you are sometimes!:lol:
