Fancied a spot of after tea turning :D Made this from a piece of ash crotch I found under the bench in the shed.

Its about an inch thick and finished with woodwax22. It was completely made with a round nose scraper(don't ask me why).

Comments as always welcome

Why ?
Because it is far easier to get a flat consistent surface with an interupted cut without the tool bounce often experienced with the interupted bevel contact when using a gouge.

Lovely rich colour JT, isn't it great to just get on the machine and work something to the end without having a load of hassle.

Great piece of turning =D>

Why can I never find pieces of wood like this all I find is Chestnut

Chestnuts have crotches too.

The trick is to look at all the manky bits of wood that others throw away. Wood that has branches coming out of it, natural splits, etc all tend to have crazy grain in them.

Lovely piece of ash, and a lovely turning made from it. If you can make things like that with a round-nosed scraper, there can't be much wrong with using one :D

I too am intrigued as to how you held the piece on the lathe.

As Chas said the interrupted part on the flat bit is a hell of a lot easier with a scraper and just letting the wood come to it rather than trying to cut with a gouge. Then I just used the sraper to form the bowl because it was in my hand and had been cutting this bit of ash so cleanly.

Ian and TM, the log was chainsawed in half,a srew chuck was put in the front to form the flat base and then reversed onto a disc of ply , held by 4 blobs of hot glue and very light/gentle cuts were made. The worst bit is picking the glue off afterwards!

Try some Melamine lacquer/sealer on face to be glued JT, I still get a good enough bond for turning but the glue lets go a little easier when finished,

Any difference in colour/finish due to melamine is soon hand sanded buffed out if using something different overall.
