Help please,
I can accurately cut the recess for hinges, no problem, it`s when I drill the pilot hole for the screw that I come unstuck. If the hole is not central, then the hinge is tipped out of line and the job goes pear shaped. Is there a foolproof way of centring the pilot hole to prevent this ? Any help will be gratefully received. Frank S.

Hi Frank

Yes hinges can be tricky, there is a tool you can buy which gets perfect centre each time

http://cgi.ebay.com/3-pc-HINGE-DRILL-BI ... 155002r157

I don't use them because my hinges are for boxes and the drill is too big for the tiny screws I use.

The method I use is to set the hinge in place and hold with some masking tape (so your not trying to juggle too many things) then with a fine pointed awl or scribe lightly mark the centre by eye, don't push too hard as it can drift to one side.

Then using a centre drill

drill where you marked with the awl then drill with your final drill bit. If one does wonder of just plug it and redrill.

The center drill method is only for small portable items and used in a drill press.

Hope that helps

Ian
