Hi Guys,
Having finally gained access to a camera, here are some shots of my first turnings. I know none of them are technically very difficult, but as a novice I'm quite pleased. All turned on a Myford ML8.

Priest made from cherry. I drilled a 10mm hole down the length of the business end, filled with lead to add some weight, and plugged.

Bud vase made from cherry. The one on the right is a brass one I made at school 30years ago. The one on the left is an attempt at a copy, which give or take a mm or two is nearly there!!

Bottle Holder in yew.Turned on a faceplate.

Pencil Holder in Walnut. Turned on a faceplate. Tried to incorporate the defect into the design. I think it works, but would be interested in any comments.

Yew Goblet. Can't take all the credit for this one, had a bit of help at woodturning club, but thought I'd show you anyway.

Any comments greatfully received.

Great start Malc,as long as you're getting satisfaction from the turning and the desire to keep going then the end products are immaterial really.

Concentrate on the finishing on the simple things while you think about how you will tackle bigger projects, style, form etc.

Excellent variety of things there giving you plenty of practice. Can't see anything to be critical of here. Well done (he said sounding patronising but not meaning to)

Very nice indeed. What is a Priest? It looks like something you'd chase a burglar with ;)

Just a little something to tap the Trout or Salmon on the back of the head prior to putting them in your poachers pocket.

Or your knuckles if you get it wrong or the fish has other ideas at the time.

It's for knocking fish over the head with.
Bugger you beat me to it Chas.
Nice turnings by the way Mike. :D

Nice work, and a nice variety (I find the bud vase very appealing as well) :D

And turnings don't all have to be "technically very difficult",yours have the extra value of being useable - the important bit is learning tool control and use ; that's much more important than what shape or style you make.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Andrew

Certainly very good for a first attempt.
I like the vase, Was it drilled right out? The goblet very nice shape, one of my favorite woods.
Not keen on the pencil holder, I think I would dug out the defect and replaced it with a unusual handle.
The Priest, most useful. =D> =D> =D>

Nice selection Malc,

Don`t worry too much about design(not that there is anything wrong with any of your pieces) I `ve not been turning long, but found at the start i got hung up about the design of everything i made, instead of getting the basics of turning right first. I`ve found the easier the tools have become to use the better my designs have become.
The main thing is to enjoy your turning & from the looks of it you are, great work.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the replies and observations - much appreciated.

John B - yes, I drilled it out with a forstner bit after it had come off the lathe
