Well here is my first serious attempt at a Goblet.Though it's only a small one.
It is a piece of Hawthorne, think it as got some spalting on,looks nice what ever it is.
4" high x 1-3/4 dia bowl.Finished with sanding sealer and woodwax.
Go on then, any critisism good or bad will be welcome.

Thanks Pete.
Bodrighy wroteDid you find it as nerve racking as me cutting the stem?
No Pete.
I done what i could with the gouge, taking very light cuts and sanded it,using varying width flat stiff pieces, while supporting it with me other hand, fingers.
Just copied the video Chas put on here.Really enjoyed doing it :D

I've just dpwnloaded the video at work. I'll have a look at it tonight. Must have another go at some thin stemmed goblets. Everyone seems to manage them except me. Give me a good old rotten lump of wood anytime, much easier

Pete.
There were a couple of times i thought the stem was gonna snap, but the wood managed to hold together.
Putting a bung in the cup helped too, with the tailstock supporting, and using your hand to support.
I'll try another one tomorrow :)

Hi Paul.

Nice attempt, everybody seems to be having a go at goblets these days. Proportions are just about right to my eye. That's how I judge my work, generally if it looks right, it is right.

No criticism, but one bit of advice. The edge detail on the stem is quite blurred and rounded, when sanding the finished item keep the sand paper away from the top of all edges, try and leave the edges fine and sharp. You'll find it looks a lot better.

Now go away and make another 1/2 doz. to keep your hand in.

Happy turning

nice one paul, love the colour, only bit of advice i might possibly say is, it tends to be a trend or fashion to make the diam of the base about a third or a quarter smaller than the diam of the bowl, i think its to do with decieving the eye into thinking that the whole thing is bigger than what it is.
imho if your happy with it, then that is all that matters!! i like it anyway!

Looks very nice,Paul - proportions are nice, finish looks good, stem looks delicate without being too thin :D
Only possible thing (and I'm 50:50 on this) is a slightly smaller base - I like it as it is,but as Dave said,it's a bit of an optical illusion anyway.
So it might be one of those rare instances where smaller is better

Andrew

Thanks Tam/Dave/Andrew.
Tam.My sanding as been mentioned before, just find it difficult on smaller pieces to keep off the fancy bits.
Andrew/Dave i will try the smaller base next time.Never noticed it before,so thanks for pointing it out.
