Hi all
Have had my lathe set up for a week now and done some playing - love it, though it's not quite so easy as the people demonstrating their stuff at Yandles made it look!
Here's my first attempt at bowl turning - full of mistakes, which I have of course chosen to retain as they will remind me of what not to do or what to avoid in future, of course
Here it is:

I must have made the most miserly purchase of any visitor to Yandles as I spent less than £4 on bits from the bargain boxes - this was a 90p piece of oak. The end grain was a pig to cut and took lots of sanding to get it 'smoothish' - guess I'll have to learn how to make my chisels really sharp...
It's going to live on my desk at work full of paperclips that I can throw at recalcitrant pupils from tomorrow, when term starts...yippee....

Hi Stewart, thats a fair return for your 90p .I think you made a great bowl for a first attempt if you are giving lessons put me down for starters. Well done, Boysie

That's 'Oak Kay' Stewart for a first attempt, don't think I would have suggested going for endgrain oak for your first bowl though, guess you have learnt a great deal in a very short time though.

Mornin' Stewart, great shape for a 'mortar and pestle', just got the 'pestle' to make now. Well done on your first attempt.

Thanks for the encouragement. It was good fun - this is a definite bug to catch! I think for my next effort I might try to find some wood with a closer grain than oak - I'll probably have to laminate something to make it a useful size though.

Nice pun, Chas - I'll get started on the egg cups soon so Mrs Chas can see I'm not wasting my time!

Hi Stewart,

I love turning Oak, it can be a tricky one until you've mastered sharpening, tool presentation angles and a few "tricks of the trade" but it's worth it in the end!

Excellent first attempt. Keeping it to see how your skills progress is a good idea, I occasionally stumble upon one of my early "pieces" and cringe  !

unfortunately it sounds like you may already be hooked though... and there's no turning back now!!!

Keep up the good work and keep us posted as to how you're getting along,

Cheers,

Richard

Very good Stewart for your first, but a difficult one to start with.End grain and Oak
Just use anything to practice on to get used to the tools and techniques.
Things will only get better from now on :D
