Got shed sorted out and can now woodturn and havent done any for about 18months but here is my first new turnings, please tell me what you think.

Wood is cherry and finish is Danish oil and wax.

The wood did crack which caused a revise in design but it still looks ok even with the cracks.

Thanks

Good turning, good finish, but for me, wrong shape.
Too square, and a bit too plain for me. Ok for a breakfast bowl though.
Getting to the cracks, at what speed did you sand? too fast and it will crack due to heat build-up.
you need to sand at slow speed, contrary to popular belief, it will not sand quicker, or better at a fast speed.
It will only create heat, the wood's worst enemy.
After 18 months, a damn good effort. =D> =D>

The grain in the bottom is stunning. It reminds me of native american carvings almost. As far as the technique and design, I am not the best to say as i've never turned a single bowl.

But it doens't speak to me. I'd almost want to turn it into a plate so the grain on the bottom could be shown off better as this is its greatest feature.

I can't wait to get turning thanks for sharing.

there were a few cracks running through it before hand, i had to change the design when they really started showing themselves and thats pretty much what i ended up with.
I was sanding at medium belt setting.

Nice work - I quite like the straight-sided shape,as it shows off the fantastic grain and figuring you've got in it :D

Well done Allie.

I'd pretty much echo what John B said. A bit square for me too. A couple of areas of torn grain and some pesky cracks but I think a great effort for such a long break.

Keep up the good work

Richard

There looks to be a bit of break out at the top inside Ali but apart from that and the shape (which is personal taste) it looks good. These square bowls are actually more difficult to make than a conventional round bottom one and you seem to have got it off well.

Nice grain on the wood, and I quite like the squarish shape - perhaps because bowls are usually curved so it's nice to see something different for a change.

Well done Alie !

Although looks more towards a large box shapre than a bowl. But well done

Same here I like straight sides, shows a lot of skill & highlights the grain
Shame about the cracks lesson I have to learn is slow down and let it stand
for a bit.
Danish oil brought out the wood lovely......
Well done, great for not picking up a tool for a long time....

I can follow the comments about the sides being a bit on the 'square side', but then you've basically justified why you had to do it like that too.. looks nicely turned, and well finished, and is certainly a rather lovely bit of wood Alie,

I guess you'd have shaped things maybe a little different, if the timber was more co-operative.

Good job !
Its an attractive, well made piece, whose shape was largely dictated by the wood rather than the turner, so I'd give the wee fella the thumbs up !  8)
