Hi.

I was rooting through some old pics and found these wip's of a Love Spoon I made for some friends who were getting married.

I'm not sure what the wood is, I found it at work as part of an old pallet. When it's cut, it goes very shiney, almost like plastic? :?

Tools used were a coping saw, drill press, stanley knife and Aldi Dremmel-type tool.

Nice :D - I'm currently attempting to make one as a practice piece with my new carving chisels froma piece of walnut, hope it turns out as well as yours.
Not sure about the timber,end-grain shot looks quite like danto.Don't know if it would be used in pallets, though :?

Looks a bit like Iroko.
Yes that's my thought on the timber.

I like this, I have a cheap set of carving tools that were bought for me, not tried them out but this looks like a good sort of thing to have ago at, thanks for the idea.

could be a job for a scroll saw - thats what i used when iused to make these - made a total killing on them while woodworking for a living during fmd in 01 - though admittedly only in the run up to valentines day.

Hey Guys!

Thanks a lot for the kind words! :D

I was rather pleased with the end result, myself. I didn't use any finish on it, mainly because i only completed it just before I had to leave for the wedding

I've just invested in a cheap-n-cheerful scrollsaw and am intending to use it to make another one for my sister-in-laws wedding. I will also look into getting a set of basic carving gouges.

The design was made up from following the traditional symbolism as well as a quick trawl on Google for entwined hearts (top piece actually came from the Clintons cards website!).

As my SIL wants kids, I'm going to have a go at incorporating a cage with a ball in it. :-k

Not being anything more than a beginner, I;d have to say give it a go. I really enjoyed making this, although I can see lots of bits to improve on.

Cheers!

rather you than me geez it int easy - my advice on this would be a) practice on a much larger piece first, and b) once you have cut out the basic outline do the cage/ball before you do owt else as it has the highest potential for going ostrich shaped.

you might find the how to here helpful http://www.wikihow.com/Whittle-a-Ball-in-a-Cage though bear in mind that on a love spoon you'll be doing it in minature

BigSoftMoose! Thanks for that link. It was really helpful.

I followed up on it's guides today and came up with this:

I used some scrap 32mm x 32mm softwood so that it was nice and big to practice on. The cutting out was done on my B&Q scrollsaw followed by some actual carving with a chisel \:D/ . I also used my Dremmel copy to do the final sanding.

I'm fairly pleased with my first attempt. Next attempt will be with some 32mm x 18mm to see how smaller wood works.

Think I may have contracted some sort of carving bug now! :D

Cheers.
Bryn. :D
