yes it would probably help but the point i was trying to make is that if you are alone in your shed and suffer a significant vascular injury, the clock is ticking in terms of you getting help and stopping blood loss. you have 5 litres or so of blood and if you lose 2 of those that is probably life-threatening. you can bleed out quite quickly from a major arterial bleed and I personally think that if you are on your own you would be better applying as much pressure as possible to the wound and calling for help immediately rather than trying to treat it yourself. if no one is around / available or if you have no phone then i agree you should try anything available. nightmare scenario - i can just see casualty having that as a plotline!

Celox was developed for millitary operations and has been proven to work - however gas man is right that its not something your likely to be administering yourself - the chances are good that if you've severed a femoral artery and dont have anyone on hand to help then basically you are going to die.

but thats not to say you shouldnt invest in it - i keep one sachet in with the chainsaw kit ( I dont use the saw when alone) , and another in the 'shop first aid kit - swimbo has been instructed in where it is and what to do in an emergency

What I was taught on the 4 day First Aid at Work course was as Gasman says. The course assumes you are doing first aid on other people, not yourself but the principles still apply.

First thing remove any further danger - switch off machines etc. Second call for help / phone ambulance if you think it is needed, if in doubt phone an ambulance! In the case of a serious laceration apply pressure and elevate.

Right that's it......
I'm not doing anymore work in the shop unless I have a full team of emergency Docs and Nurses, fully equipped, on standby in the shed.

Interestingly so was superglue. I believe it was developed as part of a field first aid kit to glue down flaps of skin during vietnam.
