So ... who's going to have the nerve to put the first post in there then ?
I was tempted to post the sawhorses I made on my wobbly workmate... Think I'd get shouted at, though!!

There was me going to put this in there.

My little lass made that. So don't be laughing at the back. She glued and pinned it. She got a great eye for the hammer mind you although I did cut up the wood for her as she's only 23.
No. Not really. She's just 4 and she already mastered the art of french polishing but on this piece (cough) she decided to use a more mixed media effect.
'Birds love bright colours and toilet paper.'
Well you can't argue with that sort of logic I thought to myself while cleaning paint off the walls, the kitchen, the grass, the roof of the house 3 doors down. In fact I've met a few birds like that when I was younger.
So alas I will have to showcase it here.

what's weird about the new category is, who is actually deciding what fine joinery and cabinet making is? I don't have a problem with it, but what is the criteria? and won't there be a personal bias?

Maybe it would have been better to have it just Joinery and Cabinetmaking, with 2 subsections one for Joinery and one for Cabinetmaking

I think the majority of members are capable of deciding if their output is in the cabinet making category or more in tune with new build carpentry and basic second fixings etc., If someone has a problem with this I'm sure other members will let them know or a moderator will move their pallet and garden furniture where it is most relevant.

So do we get an “ Amateur bodges and splintery crap” section?

Pete

Some projects have appeared including making a casement window which is carpentry IMHO.

I think stuff is being moved into there by mods so that it doesn't sit empty until someone makes finer joinery..

This is a strong and stable change.

Planning multi directional grain is now in projects, it was a question in hand tools where I think it should be.
Charley/mods I think we have to many sections it’s not easy to check any more, and your job of moving threads is going to be a nightmare.

+1
The sub-forums don't work for me, it used to be nice to cast my eye down the home page and see if there was anything new and interesting in any of the forums.

If this is the thread referred to I can find no reference in the forum logs to it having been moved sections.

There are plenty of things that need to change on the forum. Sadly sub forum categorisation wasn't one of them. Pointless...

I think the first post should have been the item that earned the comment "those joints look like they have been cut with your teeth", which is probably my favorite comment so far.

Will the new section get more traffic and posts to inspire people or less because us lowly serfs know we probably won't reach such lofty heights as Custard et al.

I agree this change creates a two class system for submissions, and being moderated by people who just don't have the right to judge. (unless it's posted by Custard ofc.)

I think this shows that the words used to label the new sub-forum are so ambiguous that they will just cause confusion.
I understand that word usage changes over time and in different countries. To me, those windows ARE joinery. Carpentry is the structural stuff -roofs, floors, formwork - and joinery is windows, doors, partitions, panels.
Some people follow the rule that carpentry never uses glue, but joinery can. Pete's usage is different, but I am sure he's not alone.

However, if you use current American English, as many forum readers or YouTube viewers will, then "joinery" is just a fancy word for "joints".

And does the word "finer" apply only to the joinery content or also to the cabinetmaking?

I have to admit that the evolution of this site has made me visit a lot less often.Since the revised visuals I might have looked in half a dozen times-it used to be three or four times a day.To introduce a new section for "Fine" standards will probably alienate or intimidate a fair few people. My not entirely serious definition of fine woodwork is that it takes an amateur forever to complete a project and the professionals make a fairly meagre living. The odd exceptions seem to be designers who talk airily about the guys on the bench as "my craftsmen"-pay rates as described earlier.

I hope we all aspire to do a good job and don't lose sight of the fact that we share the bond of being woodworkers. In my view it the piece does what its intended to do thats fine.
