Folks

New stuff at the blog and the website.

The Blog
My Kingdom for a File: why we should give proper respect to files and rasps
http://toolemerablog.typepad.com/toolemera/

The Site
From Peter Evans comes a set of 1889 Nicholson File Co. Price Lists
http://www.toolemera.com/grr/index.html

Plus, a new Feature
The first installment of an ongoing link-list of free eBooks from Google Books, The Internet Archive and others. Finding stuff that we like online is a pain. Mike Wenzloff left this idea simmering in my brain, such as it is, which now you see as this link-list. The usual jump off place is the Toolemera Press Gateway
http://www.toolemera.com/grr/index.html

Enjoy and as usual, feel free to yell if you spot some errant grammar or peculiar spelling.

Best

Thanks Gary - you have some amazing stuff on your site.

Agreed :) Gary, it seems like you never get a lot of feedback but I'm sure a bunch of us appreciate your efforts - even if we forget to say 'thank you' often enough

The Nicholson file price lists are fascinating but rammed home my ignorance on the subject. I'm familiar with a lot of the stock, but there are plenty I've never come across and can't visualise... what are cants and barettes, and some of the other specialised tools? I did figure out that 'stavesaws' are files for sharpening stavesaws (like the ones for bandsaws etc) - but Google failed to illuminate the design and use of a stavesaw.

The more you learn, the less you know :)

Thanks for the comments. I do check the blog and site stats, both of which tell me what the traffic is and what people are interested in. When I rebuilt the site I based a lot of the design on what people wanted and how I wanted to try and lead them to new subjects. Sorta magic in a way and a lot of guesswork.

The whole topic of files and rasps has taken on a life of it's own. I'll be posting, in time, at least four more Nicholson catalogs and some Simonds material too. Figuring out what these things did is sometimes difficult. But some of the catalogs do describe the purposes. How would anyone know that a 'Doctor File' was used by Calico printers to trim the print plates?
